Tommies lose a battle of give and take with the Huskies
12/3/2022 5:49:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Mendota Heights, Minn. – For the second time in as many nights the St. Cloud State Huskies got the better end of a compelling WCHA matchup, handing the Tommies a 6-3 setback on Saturday afternoon at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.
The first period remained level at its conclusion but was bookended by goals for each team. St. Cloud got on the board early when Klara Hymlarova elevated one past the Tommies' goalie, Saskia Maurer, on the power play.
With just under three minutes remaining in the opening frame the Tommies executed wonderfully on offensive when the puck went tape to tape from Lotti Odnoga to Anna Solheim and then found Maija Almich in the high slot for her second game-tying goal of the series.
Five goals were scored between the two teams in what was a frantic second period.
Lauren Stenslie was passed the puck at the blue line by Haley Maxwell and took it to the goal on a breakaway chance, scoring her second goal of the series.
The Huskies answered back 2:33 later.
Twelve minutes into the second period Luci Bianchi went to work peeling the puck off the boards and away from the Huskie defenders onto the stick of Alli Pahl. Pahl put enough on her shot from over 20 feet away to score the first goal of her career and give the Tommies their last lead of the afternoon.
The Huskies answered back :50 later and then 1:58 after that took the lead for good.
St. Cloud State scored two goals to seal the game away in the third period including one more for Klara Hymlarova making that three on the day for the senior.
St. Thomas was 0-3 on the power play in the game and 0-8 in the series. The Huskies went 2-4 on the power play and got one shorthanded goal on the board.
The Huskies outshot the Tommies 38-16.
Saskia Maurer added 32 saves to her season total including double digit work in the first and third periods.
