Tommies and Buckeyes set to square off for first round of WCHA Playoffs

ST. PAUL, MINN.- The St. Thomas women's hockey team is set to travel to Columbus, Ohio for WCHA playoffs against No. 2 Ohio State for a best-of-three series. 

Puck drop is set for 5 p.m. CT on Feb. 27, 2 p.m. CT Feb. 28, and 2 p.m. CT March 1 (if necessary).

Last Time Out 

The Tommies fell in the final regular season home series of the season, to No. 15 Minnesota State. The Purple fell 5-2 in game one and lost a close battle 4-3 in overtime in game two. 

Rylee Bartz and Ella Boerger each had two goals on the weekend; Boerger also tallied three assists, and Bartz added two. Whitney Horton also netted a goal for the Tommies. 

WCHA Honors  

The Tommies have received four weekly league honors so far this season. Rylee Bartz leads the way with two forwards of the week honors. 

Rylee Bartz – Forward of the week (Sept. 22 & Nov. 10) 

Ellah Hause – Defender of the week (Oct. 20) 

Jenessa Gazdik –Defender of the week (Nov. 10) 

WCHA Leader Board 

As a team, the Purple sits first in penalty minutes per game with the lowest in the league at 5:05, third in faceoff winning percentage at .556, and blocked shots with a 12.76 per game average. 

Individually, Ella Boerger is fourth in the face off winning percentage category with a .616. Rylee Bartz is just behind in fifth with a .594. Bartz also sits in third of the face-off wins/total face-off category with 412 wins and 282. 

Ellah Hause is tied for second overall in the league with 63 blocked shots, while Jenessa Gazdik is just behind in fourth with 62. Haley Maxwell is seventh with 54. 

DI Era Record Holders 

Rylee Bartz now holds the single season goal record with 17 in the season as she surpassed Ella Boerger's previous record earlier this season. 

 
Boerger has also surpassed the single season assists record of 13 that she and Bartz previously held. Ella now has 19 assists on the season and is now the sole single season assists leader. 

Rylee Bartz (70), Ella Boerger (68), and Madison Brown (53) make up the top three in career points. 

Ella Boerger (43), and Rylee Bartz (35), round out the top two in D1 era assists.  

Rylee Bartz leads the Tommie offense with 35 career goals in the D1 era. 

Scouting the Buckeyes 

The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes hold a 30-4-0 overall record and finished the WCHA regular season 24-4-0. 

As a team, Ohio State sits first in the league in face-off winning percentage and third in the league in assists per game (6.62), points per game (11.12). 

The Buckeyes are led by Olympic gold medalist Joy Dunne who leads the team with 29 goals and 33 assists.  

Ohio State will also return three other Olympians in Hilda Svensson, Jenna Raunio and Mira Jungåker. 

History with the Buckeyes 

The Tommies have yet to beat the Buckeyes in program history but did take a point from them earlier this season but fell 4-3 in overtime.
