Stenslie, Almich score as Tommies' comeback bid falls just short

12/2/2022 6:10:00 PM | Women's Hockey

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Thomas' comeback bid for their first WCHA win of the season came up just short as the St. Cloud State Huskies handed the Tommies a 3-2 heartbreaking loss Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

The Tommies got out to a fast start in the opening minutes of the period rifling off three consecutive shots on goal. Not one of their 12 first period shots at the net were able to best the reigning WCHA Goaltender of the Month, Sanni Ahola, who finished the game with 33 saves.

Anna Promersberger was sent to the penalty box for tripping eight minutes into the opening frame and was the only Tommie whistled for the duration of the game. The Tommies penalty kill would go a perfect 1-1 on the night.

The score was set even for the beginning 18 minutes of the contest until Emma Gentry snuck a shot over the left shoulder of Tommie netminder Alexa Dobchuk. The Huskies forced a turnover as the Tommies were clearing and that strong defensive play led to a grade-A chance at the net.

Shortly after the goal, St. Cloud was sent to the box for their first of five infringements. The Tommies could not capitalize on their opening power play opportunity and special teams struggles proved to be something the Purple could not overcome.

Just over one minute into the second period Emma Gentry scored her second goal of the game and gave St. Cloud a 2-0 lead.

The Tommies let two more power play opportunities go by without drawing the score tighter.

With under four minutes remaining in the period Lauren Stenslie was staring at a yawning net and a rebounded puck from Brieja Parent just outside the crease, she did not miss. Stenslie flung one by the outstretched pad of Ahola for her first goal of the season, and the Tommies brought the score back to within one.

The third period proved to be a dramatic one with a late flurry of action as the first twelve minutes came and went without a goal or penalty to note.

Until Maija Almich got the puck through the neutral zone into the Huskies end. Streaking down the nearside ice Almich unleashed a picture-perfect wrister from the faceoff dot, bar-down for the game tying goal, her team-leading fifth of the season.

Three minutes later the Huskies answered back with a goal of their own. Courtney Hall got it by St. Thomas' Dobchuk with help from a familiar name, Emma Gentry.

The Toms had one remaining chance at tying the game in the closing moments of regulation as the Huskies were ushered to the box for the fifth time with 2:05 remaining.

The power play unit came up empty while shooting the puck nine times in the final two minutes.

Alexa Dobchuk was pulled from the goal in those two minutes but contributed 24 saves on the night to keep her team within striking distance throughout the entire 60.

Brieja Parent assisted on Lauren Stenslie's goal, her second of the year. Maddy Clough and Gabby Billing each tallied an assist on Almich's goal, bringing each of their yearly totals up to four.
