Tommies upset #7 Minnesota Duluth in shootout, grab two WCHA points

Duluth, Minn. – It had been 308 days since the last WCHA point for St. Thomas Women's Hockey, that streak concluded on Saturday night as the Tommies took two points from last year's national runner-up, #7/8 Minnesota Duluth in a shootout victory.
The first period came and went without a goal for either team, a direct departure from the previous night's performance in which the Bulldogs defeated the Tommies 8-1.
Minnesota Duluth peppered the Toms' goaltender, Saskia Maurer, with eight shots on goal and the sophomore netminder would not be beat until 3:18 into the second frame.
The Bulldogs' goal was scored on a redirected puck that Mannon McMahon placed perfectly between the pads of Maurer just 1:45 after the goaltender denied McMahon on a mid-game penalty shot.
Maurer's fantastic night continued saving 22 of 23 shots in the opening two periods.
With 13:39 gone in the final frame and the Tommies trailing by just one goal, the Bulldogs took a two-minute penalty for roughing.
Haley Maxwell, placed ideally in the slot, received the puck off of a blocked Maddy Clough shot. The freshman defenseman let a wrister go just beyond the outstretched pad of the goalie and into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Saskia Maurer made 19 more key saves in the period to send the Tommies to their first WCHA overtime of the season.
The Bulldogs outshot the Tommies six to two in the overtime period, but neither team could break the stalemate.
Both teams locked up one WCHA point, the final of the three hinged on the winner of the shootout.
St. Thomas came away with the victory 3-2. Maija Almich, Luci Bianchi, and Maddy Clough all scored for the Tommies and Saskia Maurer made two stops to hand her team the shootout win.
Maurer finished with 48 saves for a .980 save percentage on the night.
Quoting Coach Johnson
"It was a tremendous feeling in the locker room, whether you call it a win or a shootout win, it certainly felt like it was a victory for St. Thomas. I was just so proud of the effort."
"We had talked about playing the game five minutes at a time and I really think we did that. Especially after being outplayed yesterday and having a tough result."
"I thought we had great play in the overtime, we were diligent, we were tough, we were resilient, we were everything you need to do to win a game like that against a team that, on paper, has more talent. Our kids had heart and courage and I was just so excited for them. To see the locker room after the game is certainly one of the top coaching moments of my career and I will always carry it with me."
