Mendota Heights, Minn. – Just five days after grabbing their first WCHA points of the season, Tommie Women's Hockey snagged another season milestone, their first WCHA win, downing the Bemidji State Beavers 3-1 at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena Friday.
The first period belonged to the Beavers. Bemidji State outshot the Tommies 11-4 in the opening twenty getting one by goaltender Alexa Dobchuk with 16:50 remaining. St. Thomas had one chance on the power play in the opening minutes but could not capitalize.
Intermission break was exactly what the Tommies needed, and they never looked back outshooting the Beavers 20-5 in the second period. Tommie defenseman, Isabel Lippai accounted for four of those shots including a wrister from just inside the blue line for a power play goal, the first of her Division I career, assisting on the play were Emma Larson and Anna Promersberger.
Both teams came out of their locker rooms for the final frame tied at one.
Tied until Haley Maxwell turned over the Beavers in the neutral zone. The freshmen defensemen gained the offensive end and with the puck on her forehand found the tiniest of spaces to shoot through the Beavers defense and into the back of the net for the first game-winning goal of her young career.
The Beavers pulled their goaltender with just under two minutes to go in regulation and Abby Promersberger put them away with 1:13 left for her second goal of the season.
Alexa Dobchuk was in goal for all 60 minutes and saved 24 of 25 shots faced for a .960 save percentage and her second career WCHA victory.
