Last Weekend Recap

Last weekend the Tommies earned their first two WCHA points with an upset over #7/8 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday.

On Friday,  Tommies Women's Hockey gave up three goals in the opening period and could not hold down the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth in the first game of the weekend series at Amsoil Arena.

The host Bulldogs took a 8-1 victory. St. Thomas received 36 saves from Alexa Dobchuk in two periods and 12 from Maggie Malecha in one.

Former UMD Bulldog, Brieja Parent scored her first goal of the season with 4:50 to play in the final frame, Emma Larson provided the assist.

On Saturday night, the Tommies took two points from last year's national runner-up, #7/8 Minnesota Duluth in a shootout victory.

With 13:39 gone in the final period and the Tommies trailing by just one goal, the Bulldogs took a two-minute penalty for roughing.

Haley Maxwell, placed ideally in the slot, received the puck off of a blocked Maddy Clough shot.

The freshman defenseman let a wrister go just beyond the outstretched pad of the goalie and into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

St. Thomas came away with the shootout victory 3-2. Maija Almich, Luci Bianchi, and Maddy Clough all scored for the Tommies in the shootout and Saskia Maurer made two stops to hand her team the shootout win.

Maurer finished with 48 saves for a .980 save percentage on the night.

The Purple earned their first-ever Division I victory against Bemidji State last season when they defeated the Beavers 2-1 on home ice.

Series History

The Tommies and Beavers have met four times in their programs' history. All of those contests came in the Tommies inagural season in the WCHA and NCAA Division I.

Similar to this season's series between the two opponents, the Tommies hosted the Beavers in Mendota Heights in the first half of the calender.

Bemidji State took the opening game 3-0 but dropped the second game on St. Thomas home ice 2-1.

All points in the game were scored by Tommie returners. Maija Almich and Luci Bianchi, this year's captains, scored the goals and Maddie Jurgensen, Abby Promersberger, and Nicole Vallario each added the assists.

Bemidji State then won both games on their home ice up north by scores of 4-3 and 4-0.

Tommies History

St. Thomas Women's Hockey turned the page to a new chapter along with the rest of the athletic department last season in transitioning to Division I.

However, this weekend the team will look back on its 25 year history by welcoming back alumni from the entire quarter-century on Saturday at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

The Tommies competed in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) for 23 years and attained six regular season conference titles and six playoff conference titles.
