Men’s Soccer faces first home setback of the season

9/22/2024 3:45:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Hoelscher scores first collegiate goal in 2-1 loss

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Men's Soccer team welcomed the Lindenwood Lions to South Field on a sunny Sunday afternoon. In the competitive matchup, the Tommies (3-2-2 overall) faced their first home setback of the season, falling to Lindenwood (4-3-1 overall) in the second meeting between the two squads.

RECAP
After three key saves by Moritz Krenc, Lindenwood found its first of two goals of the match, putting one past the sophomore goalkeeper and taking the first lead of the game during the 22nd minute of play.

Continuing to show a key characteristic of the St. Thomas offense this season, the Tommies responded just 11 minutes later as Charlie Hoelscher recorded his first collegiate goal to tie the game.

Heading into halftime knotted at 1-1, the Lions held the advantage in corner kicks 6-1 through 45 minutes, and 11-2 in today's match.

Early in the second half, the Lions once again scored on a corner kick opportunity. Adding two shots in the second half, both from Gunnar Busch, St. Thomas was unable to find the equalizer, ultimately falling to Lindenwood 2-1.

Ranked second in the Summit League in saves per game (4.86), Moritz Krenc finished the game totaling six saves for the Purple.

Recording an assist in this afternoon's match up, Faris Colic has become the first Tommie in the DI-era to reach 10 points in a single season.

QUOTABLE
"It was a competitive match up," Head Coach Jon Lowery said. "The middle third of the game we built momentum, but disappointed for us to fall on two corner kicks. Krenc keeps us in games when we need it, but the opposite side of that is we are giving up too many chances."
