The Tommies welcome the Bulldogs for a WCHA weekend series

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey welcomes the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs for a WCHA series. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. on both Friday, Feb. 9th and Saturday, Feb. 10th at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Last Time Out
Last weekend, St. Thomas faced off against No. 5 Minnesota. In game one, the Purple fell in a close battle, 3-1. St. Thomas opened scoring on Friday night, but in the close game the Gophers scored two third period goals to top the Tommies.
 
In game two, the Tommies fell to the Gophers by a score of 5-2.
 
Olivia King started in net both games against her former team, totaling 47 saves on the weekend.
 
History against UMD
In November, the Tommies traveled north to play Minnesota Duluth in the first of two meetings this season.
 
The Bulldogs swept the Tommies on their home ice, defeating St. Thomas by scores of 3-1 and 4-0. Allie Monrean scored the lone goal of that weekend for the Purple, unassisted.
 
Last season, St. Thomas earned a tie against the Bulldogs at Amsoil Arena, picking up the extra WCHA point in the shootout. Maddy Clough scored the shootout-winner in this game on Dec. 10, 2022.
 
Scouting the Bulldogs
The No. 8-ranked Minnesota-Duluth Women's Hockey program (15-11-2, 12-10-0 WCHA) is led by Head Coach Maura Crowell in her ninth season.
 
The Bulldog offense is led by Mannon McMahon, who totaled 24 points (10G, 14A) in 28 games played.
 
Goaltenders Hailey MacLeod and Ève Gascon have both played significant minutes for the Bulldogs. Gascon has played in 16 games, recording a 1.66 GAA and .946 SV%. MacLeod has competed in 13 games, posting a 1.23 GAA and .953 SV%. The duo has recorded eight shutouts this season.
 
Record Breakers
The Tommies have set a DI era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 16 skaters have scored goals for the Tommies, led by freshman Ella Boerger, who has found the back of the net 10 times. Boerger's 10 goals have also set a record of goals scored in a single season.
 
In 29 games played, Bartz (7G, 11A – 18P) and Boerger (10G, 10A– 20P) have passed the DI single season record in points scored for the Tommies.  The previous record was 13 total points set by Maddy Clough (2022-23 season) and Abby Promersberger (2021-22 season).
 
Bartz and Boerger have also surpassed the single season record in assists (previously 8), and Bartz has tied record for power play goals scored in a single season (3).  
 
Offensive Growth
The Tommies have scored 59 goals throughout 29 games of the 2023-24 season, while the Purple totaled 53 through 36 games just last season.
 
The Purple have faced non-conference opponents Franklin Pierce, Lindenwood, Cornell and Harvard. In four games played, the Tommies have outshot non-conference opponents 225-115 and outscored opponents 25-16.   
 
This season, the Tommies have scored 14 power play goals. Last season the Tommies scored eight on the power play, and recorded 11 with the player advantage during the in 2021-22 season.
 
Freshmen Making an Impact
Four of five of the Tommies' top point-scorers are Tommie Hockey newcomers. Ella Boerger (10G, 10A – 20P), Rylee Bartz (7G, 11A - 18P), Ellah Hause (5G, 5A – 10P) and Maddie Brown (5G, 5A – 10P) lead the Tommies so far this season.
 
D-Side
The purple defense continues to make an impact not only in the defensive zone, but offensively as well. Junior defender, Nicole Vallario has recorded career-high 13 points (5G, 8A) in 29 games played.
 
Junior captain, Maddy Clough leads the Tommies both on and off the ice. Clough has totaled nine points (1G, 8A) and recorded the shootout winner over Bemidji State on Jan. 26.
   
Defensively, Ellah Hause leads the team and T-5th in the WCHA in blocked shots, blocking 52 shots in 29 games played.
 
Schedule Talk    
The Tommies have been road warriors during the back half of the season, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from the comforts of Mendota Heights, Minnesota. St. Thomas opened 2024 with three consecutive road games against the Badgers and Huskies before returning home against St. Cloud State on January 20. The Tommies will also host Minnesota-Duluth (February 9-10) and the Mavericks (February 24) in the final month of the regular season.
