Stenslie and Boerger score in Tommies’ 5-2 loss at No. 5 Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team traveled to Minneapolis to face the No. 5-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers for game two of the weekend. Three second period goals lifted the Gophers over the Tommies in the series finale.
RECAP
Each team found the back of the net once during the first period. Halfway through the opening frame St. Thomas was sent to the box, putting the Gophers on the first power play. Minnesota capitalized on this player advantage, scoring the first goal of the game.
It took the Tommies just a minute to tie the game back up with a goal from Lauren Stenslie, her fifth of the season.
The remainder of the opening period stayed scoreless, with Minnesota leading in shots on goal, 12-5.
St. Thomas began the second period on the power play, as the Gophers' Abbey Murphy was called for roughing at the end of the first. Shortly after Murphy's penalty expired, she broke the tie, putting Minnesota back in the lead, 2-1.
Once again, it took the Tommies just over a minute to find an equalizing goal. Ella Boerger went end-to-end, scoring her team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Midway through the second period, St. Thomas was called for back-to-back penalties. The Gophers found the go-ahead goal on the first power play goal, while the Tommies successfully killed the second.
At the 4:57 mark of the second period, Minnesota extended its lead 4-2.
With a minute remaining in the middle frame, the Gophers were assessed two penalties just nine seconds apart, including a five-minute major.
St. Thomas began the final 20 minutes with a two-player advantage, but the Gophers successfully fended off the Purple power play.
With 13:15 remaining in the game, the Gophers scored their fifth and final goal of the game, earning a 5-2 victory over the Tommies.
