Women’s Hockey falls to the Mavericks in series opener

The Tommies drop game one of the series to Minnesota State, 7-1
MANKATO, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team traveled to Mankato, Minn. to face the Minnesota State Mavericks for game one of the weekend series. In their second meeting with the Mavericks this season, the Tommies fell 7-1.
RECAP
Game one of the series remained scoreless through the first 12 minutes of play at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center until the Mavericks scored the first goal of the night on a breakaway. After the opening goal, the Mavericks added seven shots before doubling their lead, scoring their second goal of the game with about five minutes remaining in the opening period.
In the first frame there were three penalties called, sending the Tommies to the box twice. Both teams successfully shut down the opposing power play.
The Mavericks offensive pressure continued in the second period, as the Mavericks scored three goals in the middle frame. This included two goals in the first two minutes of the second period. After the Mavericks extended their lead 4-0, Olivia King went in net for the Tommies for the remainder of the second period. King stopped nine of 10 shots on goal during her time in net tonight.
The Tommies made another goalie change, as Maggie Malecha entered the game for the final 20 minutes of play.
Early in the final period, Lauren Stenslie scored the lone goal of the game for the Tommies after intercepting a pass from the Mavericks defense. This goal marked Stenslie's first of the season and 10th of her career.
The Mavericks added two more third period goals, and ultimately defeated the Tommies 7-1 on Friday night.
QUOTABLE
"Minnesota State was better tonight," Head Coach Joel Johnson said. "It was disappointing. We have more in the tank than we showed tonight."
