Women’s Hockey Set for a Home-and-Home Series with Minnesota State

The Tommies return to conference play against the Mavericks

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team returns to conference play and faces Minnesota State for a home-and-home series. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. on both Friday Dec. 1st at Mayo Clinic HSEC and Saturday, Dec. 2nd at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Last Time Out - D1 in DC
The Tommies return home from a road trip to the nation's capital. The Tommies faced Cornell and Harvard for the first time in program history in the D1 in DC tournament.
 
Last Friday, the Tommies fell to Cornell by a score of 4-1 at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. On Saturday, the Tommies defeated Harvard, 4-3. Maddie Brown scored three goals on the weekend, including two against the Crimson.
 
Hall of Fame Game
Last time the Tommies faced the Mavericks was the Hall of Fame Face-Off Classic on Nov. 9th. The Tommies defeated the Mavericks 4-1 in the Thursday night game at Maple Grove Ice Arena.
 
In the Hall of Fame Game, graduate student, Calla Frank made 21 saves and recorded a .955 SV% against her former team. Ella Boerger and Rylee Bartz led the Tommie offense, each recording three-point games.  
 
The Mavericks hold an 8-1 overall record against the Tommies. Last season, the Tommies fell to the Mavericks by margins of two, 2-0 at home (Oct. 21 and Nov. 20) and 3-1 on the road at the Mayo Clinc HSEC (Oct. 20 and Nov. 19). 
 
In their first season of Division the Tommies played against Minnesota State in the Hockey Day Minnesota contest in Mankato, taking place on Jan. 23rd, 2022.  

Scouting Minnesota State
Minnesota State (5-10-0, 1-9-0 WCHA) is led by Head Coach John Harrington, who is in his ninth season of coaching the Mavericks.  
 
Minnesota State has earned their lone WCHA victory against Bemidji State, earning a series split on the road in Bemidji, Minn.
 
The Mavericks earned the Smashville Classic title last weekend, defeating Robert Morris, 5-1, and Boston University, 7-2, in the Nashville tournament.
 
Offensively, seniors, Sydney Langseth (4 goals, 10 assists – 14 points) and Jamie Nelson (10 goals, 3 assists – 13 points) lead the Mavericks this season. Langseth has scored three goals on the power play, while Nelson has totaled four game-winning goals.
 
Record Breakers
The Tommies have set a DI era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 13 skaters have scored goals for the Tommies, led by freshmen Rylee Bartz and Ella Boerger, who have found the back of the net six times. 
 
In 17 games played, Bartz (6 goals, 8 assists – 14 points) and Boerger (6 goals, 9 assists – 15 points) have passed the single season high in points scored.  The previous record was 13 total points set by Maddy Clough (2022-23 season) and Abby Promersberger (2021-22 season).
 
Boerger has also surpassed the single season record in assists (previously 8), and Bartz has tied record for power play goals scored in a single season (3).  
 
Offensive Growth
The Tommies have scored 39 goals throughout the first 17 games of the 2023-24 season, while the Purple totaled 53 through 36 games just last season.
 
The Purple have faced non-conference opponents Franklin Pierce, Lindenwood, Cornell and Harvard. In four games played, the Tommies have outshot non-conference opponents 225-115 and outscored opponents 25-16.   
 
Fresh Faces
Three first-years lead the Tommie offense in the first 17 games of the season. Ella Boeger (6 goals, 9 assists – 15 points), Rylee Bartz (6 goals, 8 assists – 14 points) and Maddie Brown (5 goals, 2 assists – 7 points) lead the Tommies in scoring in the first half of the season. Boerger has recorded three three-point games, Bartz has recorded five multi-point games, and Brown has totaled two multi-point games. 
 
In early October, after tallying 14 shots on goal and recording five points, Boerger earned the first WCHA honor of her career as the Rookie of the Week. On Nov. 13th Boerger earned her second conference honor, named WCHA Rookie of the Week again. That same week, Bartz was named WCHA Forward of the week after recording her first three-point game.
 
Bartz and Boerger lead the freshmen in the WCHA in points this season.
  
Defensively, Ellah Hause leads the team in blocked shots, blocking 31 shots in 17 games played. Hause has also recorded three goals and three assist, tallying her first goal in first game played on Sep. 29th against Franklin Pierce. 
 
Schedule Talk  
The Tommies schedule is jam packed with tough competition, both in nonconference and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.
 
This weekend against Minnesota State is the first non-top 10 nationally ranked WCHA series opponent that the Tommies will play this season.
  
The Tommies will be road warriors during the back half of the season, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from the comforts of Mendota Heights, Minnesota. St. Thomas will open 2024 with three consecutive road games against the Badgers and Huskies before returning home to home St. Cloud State on January 20. The Tommies with also host Minnesota-Duluth (February 9-10) and the Mavericks (February 24) in the final month of the regular season.
