Women's Hockey defeats Harvard in DC Tournament, 4-3

Bartz, Brown and Oberg score for the Tommies to earn a victory over the Crimson

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team traveled to Arlington, Va. to play in the D1 in DC tournament at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex. In game two of the tournament, the Tommies faced Harvard for the first time in program history.

Rylee Bartz, Maddie Brown and Marki Oberg scored for the Tommies in a 4-3 victory over the Crimson.

RECAP
The Harvard Crimson opened scoring in game two of the D1 in DC tournament. The Crimson found the back of the net four minutes into the opening period. After the Crimson scored the opening goal, the Tommies made an offensive push, putting 10 shots on goal in eight minutes. Freshman, Maddie Brown then scored her second of the weekend to tie the game 1-1 with six minutes remaining in the first.

The Tommies and Crimson went into the first intermission knotted at one, with the Tommies outshooting Harvard 15-7 in the first period.

In the second period, the Purple added three goals to take the lead over the Crimson.  The first of the period came from Rylee Bartz, who scored her sixth of the season on the power play. Five minutes later, junior, Marki Oberg scored her first collegiate goal to put the Tommies ahead, 3-1. Freshman, Ella Boerger assisted on these first two goals of the second period.

At the 13:14 mark of the middle frame, Maddie Brown scored her second of the game to send the Tommies into the second intermission with a 4-1 lead.

With five minutes remaining in the third period, two Tommies were sent to the box, putting the Crimson on a 5-on-3 power play. Harvard capitalized on the player-advantage and scored two power play goals within a minute to cut the Tommies' lead 4-3.

With less than a minute remaining, the Crimson were sent to the box for tripping, putting the Tommies on the power play for the remainder of the game. The Tommies defeated Harvard 4-3 to earn a victory on the final day of the D1 in DC tournament.
 
TOP TOMMIES 
· Freshman, Maddie Brown scored two goals for the Tommies tonight and three goals in the D1 in DC Tournament.
· Junior, Marki Oberg scored her first collegiate goal against Harvard this afternoon.
· The Tommies outshot the Crimson, 40-24, led by Ella Boerger who put six on net. Boerger also tallied two assists against Harvard. Boerger leads the Tommies with 15 points so far this season.
· Freshman, Rylee Bartz scored her sixth goal of the season for the Tommies.
· Olivia King earned her third win of the season, stopping 21 of 24 shots on goal.
 
QUOTABLE
"It was a great effort," Head Coach Joel Johnson said. "I thought it was our most complete game, and certainly our most complete first two periods. We got into some penalty trouble late in the third, but I thought we played three good periods of hockey. I was really excited to see our team rewarded with the win."

The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team will return to conference play and face Minnesota State for a home-and-home series.
