Game Notes -- Women’s Hockey opens its WCHA season going toe-to-toe with the No. 5 ranked Wisconsin Badgers

10/5/2022 1:39:00 PM | Women's Hockey

St. Paul, Minn. - Women's Hockey begins its 25th season as a program and second season of  Division I competition Friday with a mighty test against the Wisconsin Badgers at La Bahn Arena in Madison, Wisc.

St. Thomas faces off against Wisconsin at 7 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will be on the tail end of a four-game homestand for the Badgers, marking the first time the Tommies will play at La Bahn Arena in the program's history.

The Tommies had the opening week of the season off, while the Badgers got out to a quick start, splitting their opening series on the road at Penn State, but   outscoring the Nittany Lions 10-5, and then sweeping their first two games at home against Lindenwood by scores of 6-0 and 10-0.

St. Thomas returns 17 of its players from the 2021-22 roster and is led by Joel Johnson who is in his second season as head coach.

Schedule Talk
St. Thomas will play 28 regular-season games against WCHA opponents, including 14 weekend series. The Tommies will also match up for three two-game series against non-conference foes.

St. Thomas embarks on its 20th home season at the St. Thomas Ice Arena on Oct. 14th and 15th with non-conference games against Franklin Pierce.

The Tommies have a daunting finish to their 2022-23 season facing off with four top-five nationally ranked teams in their last six series including two series against their in-state rivals, the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Only a two-game road series with Bemidji State splits the nationally dominant foes to finish the year.

Preseason Manitoba Tussle
Tommie Women's Hockey exploded to score four goals in a less than five-minute span of the third period in its 4-1 home exhibition victory over the University of Manitoba on Sunday, Sept. 25th.

Manitoba took a 1-0 lead 3:11 into the third period. Sophomore Abby Promersberger answered for the Toms at 10:15 into the frame, and graduate player Anna Solheim put the Toms ahead to stay with a goal 46 seconds later.
The Toms added two power-play goals at 12:35 and 15:11 elapsed in the period, after a 5:00 major penalty. Newcomer Haley Maxwell's goal made it 3-1, and senior Luci Bianchi connected for the final goal.

Last Season
The Purple look to improve on last season's 5-27-1 record. Seventeen of those losses came against four WCHA opponents that advanced to the 11-team national tournament. The Tommies lost seven games by one-or-two goal margins.

Two of the three Tommies WCHA victories came in games against St. Cloud State by a score of 3-2 in both. The other lone victory came in a 2-1 game against Bemidji State.

The team returns all eight of their top point-scorers from 2021-22: Abby Promersberger (13), Allie Monrean (12), Lauren Stenslie (10), Anna Solheim (10), Luci Bianchi (9), Maddy Clough (8), Nicole Vallario (7), and Maija Almich (7).

Familiar faces Saskia Maurer and Alexa Dobchuk return between the pipes for the 2022-23 season. Both goalies accounted for all recorded starts in the 2021-22 season.

Series History
The Tommies are 0-3 against Wisconsin all-time, falling 7-1, 5-1, and 3-1 when the two teams played in their inagural Division I season.

The losses came at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena as the midseason series scheduled to take place at La Bahn Arena was cancelled.

The Tommies were outscored 15-3 in the season set of 2021-22, scoring one goal in each of the three matchups.

World Class Talent
Lotti Odnoga (Hungarian National Team) joined her new Tommie teammates Nicole Vallario and Saskia Maurer (Swiss National Team) as competitors in the recent 10-team Women's World Championships in Denmark.

She's got the Maurer
Saskia Maurer played in only 10 games during the 2021-22 season due to her participation in the 2022 Olympics for Team Switzerland.

However, she was quick to leave her mark in the Tommie history books as she stopped a staggering 60 Badger shots on Nov. 21st, 2021, in the 5-1 loss. The performance was good for a Division I era record and second all-time in school history.

Maurer was also named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team for her play between the pipes. Her 3.36 GAA and .916 SV% were both team leading.
