Women's Hockey falls to Minnesota State despite early surge

10/20/2022 8:26:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Mankato, Minn – St. Thomas' effort to topple Minnesota State in series opener falls short, as the Mavericks hand the Tommies a 3-1 setback in Mankato on Thursday.

St. Thomas opened the scoring with Gabby Billing sneaking her second puck past WCHA goaltenders this season, Anna Solheim and Haley Maxwell assisted on the play. The Tommies first lead in conference action lasted just over two minutes. Minnesota State answered right back on the power play, their third of the season.

That was all the scoring the Tommies could muster. The Mavericks added one goal in each of the final periods delivering their third goal with five minutes to play.

The Mavericks controlled most of the action, outshooting the Purple 36-12 and outdrawing 35-10.

Alexa Dobchuk played the entire game between the pipes, her first full game of the season. Dobchuk stopped 33 Minnesota State shots and finished with a .917 SV%.

Gabby Billing now has two points on two goals this season.

Anna Solheim's assist was her first of the year and the graduate captain now has two points.

Haley Maxwell's assist marks her first collegiate point.
