Men's Soccer drops 1-0 decision in first home D-I game
9/6/2021 6:21:00 PM | Men's Soccer
A packed bleacher section on hand for the first home men's soccer game in St. Thomas' Division I era created a fun atmosphere. But visiting Drake spoiled the party.
The Bulldogs scored after a scramble in front of the net in the 37th minute, and DU senior goalkeeper Jared Brown made eight saves to lead the Bulldogs (3-1) past the host Tommies (0-5) by a 1-0 count.
Tucker Mann had five saves in goal for the Purple, who have three one-goal defeats in a tough start to the season.
After playing six contests away in a 16-day span in the exhibition and regular season, St. Thomas was looking for a lift on its home field. The latest obstacle for the Toms was a Bulldog team with speed and experience -- eight of DU's 11 starters are seniors or fifth-year players, and they made few errors.
St. Thomas coach Jon Lowery said the team is making progress but needs to be more efficient on offense. "In the past we would get 14 or 16 chances on offense, but now at this level that may be more like four to eight really good scoring opportunities, so we just have to get better and find the confidence to finish," Lowery said.
St. Thomas plays Friday night at Gonzaga University in Spokane.
