The St. Thomas men's soccer team defeated UW-Oshkosh 1-0 in thrilling fashion on Sunday afternoon at South Field. Miles Stockman-Willis scored on a penalty kick in overtime to break a scoreless tie and give the Tommies the win. The win comes one day after falling to MIAC foe Hamline and improves UST to 8-4-0 overall. UW-Oshkosh drops to 7-5-1 on the year.
The two teams went through the first 45 minutes in a scoreless tie, but not for a lack of chances, as both teams had opportunities to score. St. Thomas' best chance came in the 38th minute when Matt Bouche (pictured on right) got behind the Titan defense and had a one-on-one with the UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper, Sam Gabrilska. Bouche's shot avoided a charging Gabrilska, but glanced off the left post and held the scoreless tie intact.
Bouche had another chance in the final seconds of regulation. The senior found himself with a look in front of the net, but his shot skimmed just over the top of the cross bar and the two teams went to overtime.
In the fourth minute of overtime, junior Miles Stockman-Willis drew a penalty inside the box and was awarded a penalty kick. With the tension at its highest, Stockman-Willis put it away in the left side of the goal to give his team the dramatic 1-0 win.
"Today showed a lot about what kind of team we have," said Head Coach Jon Lowery. "Yesterday was a tough day where we didn't come away with the result we were looking for. The guys stuck together and came back to beat a very good UW-Oshkosh team today, which was a really big step for us."
For the game, UW-Oshkosh held a shot advantage of 10-5. Stockman-Willis' goal was the only shot on goal of the game for the Tommies.
Mitchell Koehler recorded his first win in a Tommie uniform after making three saves in the shutout. Sam Gabrilska was tagged with the loss.
St. Thomas will head back into conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 8th when the Tommies make the trek to Moorhead, Minn., to take on Concordia College for a 4:00 p.m., kickoff.
