Men's soccer ties Concordia 2-2

10/8/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

The St. Thomas men's soccer team recorded its first tie of the 2014 season on Wednesday afternoon when it tied Concordia College 2-2 in Moorhead, Minn.  With the result, the Tommies move to 8-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the MIAC, while the Cobbers are now 0-10-1 overall and 0-4-1 in league play.

St. Thomas got on the scoreboard early in the first half when Matt Bouche scored his fifth goal of the year.  Bouche's goal came in the eighth minute off a Milles Stockman-Willis assist to give the Toms a 1-0 lead.

It was not until the 70th minute that the Cobbers answered.  Robert Fordyce scored his first goal of the season to tie the game 1-1 thanks to a helper from Sage Thornbrugh.

Just less than 16 minutes later, the Tommies recaptured the lead on a Ryan Mooney goal.  Mooney's third score of the season appeared to be the game-winner, as it came with just four minutes remaining in the contest.

However, Fordyce and the Cobbers had other plans.  In the 88th minute, Fordyce scored his second goal of the game unassisted and sent the game into overtime with the two squads tied at two apiece.

St. Thomas was the only team to put a shot on goal in the first overtime, but the lone chance for the Tommies was saved by Concordia goalkeeper Ben Glogoza.

Concordia was able to throw two shots on target in the second overtime compared to one for St. Thomas, but neither team could get one to cross the goal line as the two teams settled for the tie.

St. Thomas flexed an advantage in nearly every category, outshooting the Cobbers 19-13.  The Tommies also placed 13 shots on goal compared to six for Concordia.  UST also took three corner kicks compared to zero for the Cobbers and recorded nine fouls to Concordia's 22.

Mitchell Wolff was the goalkeeper of record for the Tommies, logging all 110 minutes in net and recording four saves.  He is now 7-3-1 on the year.  Cobber keeper Ben Glogoza made 11 saves in a 110-minute effort and moves to 0-8-1.

St. Thomas will next travel to St. Peter, Minn., to take on Gustavus Adolphus College in another MIAC bout on Saturday afternoon.  That contest is slated for a 1:00 p.m., start.
