Men's soccer drops 1-0 decision to Gustavus

The St. Thomas men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties scored the lone goal of the contest in the 75th minute to capture the narrow victory. With the loss, the Tommies drop to 8-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAC, while Gustavus improves to 10-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in league play.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes. The Tommies dodged six shots in the first half, although just one of those shots was on target. St. Thomas was unable to register a shot in the opening frame.
In the second half, the Tommies were able to put a shot on net. Freshman Pierce Erickson took an attempt at a header, but it was saved by Gustavus goalkeeper Braden Schmid and St. Thomas was denied the go-ahead goal.
Instead, Gustavus's Zach Brown scored the game's lone goal in the 75th minute to eventually give his team the 1-0 win. Brown, who is the MIAC's leading goal scorer, received an assist from Patrick Roth to put away the game-winner.
St. Thomas was unable to score the equalizer in the final 15 minutes and suffered the narrow loss.
Gustavus flexed a shot advantage of 13-2 in the win. However, the Gusties put just three shots on goal compared to one for the Tommies. Gustavus also notched seven corner kicks to St. Thomas's five.
St. Thomas goalkeeper Mitchell Koehler suffered the loss after making two saves and drops to 1-2-0 on the year. Gustavus keeper Braden Schmid recorded one save in the win and improves to 8-2-1.
The Tommies will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 15th when they host Saint John's University at South Field. That game is set for a 3:30 p.m., start.
