Offense ruled the day as Softball splits in New Mexico

The Tommies dropped game one 10-7 but bounced back with a 15-8 win in game two

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – St. Thomas softball (3-1) traveled across the Texas-New Mexico border and brought its bats along in a pair of high-scoring early season match ups. The Toms led UMass Lowell (1-3) 6-0 before ultimately falling 10-7 to start the day but bounced back with an impressive 15-8 win over New Mexico State (2-1).

Game One
The Tommies scored three runs in the first, one in the second, and two in the third to open a 6-0 lead over UMass Lowell. Kameron Monson, Morgan Klein (2), and Avery Wukawitz earned the first four RBI before Grace Nosan belted her second career home run for two runs in the bottom of the third.

Mya Tautges got the starting nod for the first time in her young collegiate career and was rolling through the first three innings. The freshman allowed three runs in the fourth and was relieved by Keira Murphy with two outs in her final frame. Murphy allowed both inherited runners to score along with two more in the inning.

UMass Lowell got three runs across off Murphy in the fifth inning but none of them were earned after a pair of errors from the Tommie defense.

Abbi Sterlen launched her second home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 10-7 game, but the comeback bid stopped there.

Three Tommie pitchers made an appearance: Mya Tautges went 3.2 innings with 5 earned runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts, Keira Murphy went 1.1 innings with 5 runs (two earned) allowed on six hits and one walk, and Ava Kleinfeldt steadied the ship with 2.0 innings of flawless softball.

Tautges did record two hits with one run scored, Abbi Stierlen hit safely twice with a home run, as did Grace Nosan. Avery Wukawitz and Laken Lienhard each reached base twice as well. The Toms belted nine hits with a pair of long balls but their four errors in the field came back to haunt them.

Game Two
The New Mexico State Aggies gave their home crowd a roller-coaster of a show in game two. Cassidy Carby doubled home Wukawitz and Lienhard in the first inning to put the Tommies on top early, but NMST scored four runs off Ava Kleinfeldt in the bottom half of the inning.

A pair of home runs by Wukawitz and Stierlen (two-run) along with an RBI single by Morgan Klein shot the Toms back into the lead in the third inning. Kleinfeldt worked out of the fourth after she allowed a two-run home run to tie the contest at 6-6.

The sophomore pitcher got some more run support in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Ella Cook. Cook then replaced Kleinfeldt in the bottom of the fifth after the Tommie starter gave up a pair of singles to start the frame. Cook walked her first batter and then worked out of the bases loaded jam without allowing a run.

The Ella Cook magic was not over, she homered for a second time in the top of the sixth to score Carby and Miley Wichman and take advantage of an Aggie error. New Mexico State barked back with two runs in the sixth but ran out of juice against Cook and the Toms.

With the Purple already ahead 10-8, Addison Coffey belted her first career home run (three-run) to start the scoring in the seventh, Carby doubled home Zoe Trotter, and Cook tripled to bring Izzy Vick home. The final score was 15-8.

Kleinfeldt got the win on 4+ innings with six earned runs, seven hits, and two strikeouts while Ella Cook saved the day with 3.0 innings with two earned runs on three hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.

Cook led everybody with a staggering 13 total bases, 4-4 with three runs scored and five RBI on a double, triple, and two home runs. Laken Lienhard, Avery Wukawitz, Cassidy Carby, Morgan Klein, and Abbi Stierlen each had two-hit games.

In total, the Purple tallied 17 hits with two walks and 10 extra-base hits.
