Softball takes to the American Southwest for 2026 opening day

The reigning Summit League champs return 78.8% of their at-bats from last season
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas softball took a monumental leap from 2024 to 2025 by increasing its win total from 16 to 33. The Tommies return nearly every key player from that squad that went 14-4 in Summit League play and earned their first ever regular season conference crown.
They enter 2026 picked to finish second in the conference behind the Omaha Mavericks in the preseason coaches' poll. Their first weekend sees the Purple head to El Paso, Texas for two games and then Las Cruces, N.M. for three hosted by the New Mexico State Aggies.
First pitch of the season is scheduled for 11:00 am CST on Friday, February 6 against the Utah Valley Wolverines (18-33, 8-15 WAC). The Toms' second game will begin at 5:00 p.m. CST against the hosting UTEP Miners (22-28, 10-17 CUSA).
St. Thomas will travel across state lines for the remainder of the weekend with game three scheduled for 10:00 a.m. CST on Saturday against UMass Lowell (17-29, 7-13 AE). Game four will start at 4:00 p.m. CST against New Mexico State (27-27, 14-13 CUSA) and the Toms will round out opening weekend with a 10:00 a.m. CST start for a rematch with the Aggies on Sunday.
The Tommies have never played any of their five opponents this weekend during the DI era. They are 0-2 all-time against the WAC, 0-0 against the AE, and 1-1 against CUSA.
