Mya Tautges earned her first win, Avery Wukawitz went 4-4, and Cassidy Carby belted two HR

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – St. Thomas softball (4-1) wrapped up a very successful opening weekend with a 15-2 win in five innings over the New Mexico State Aggies (3-2) on Sunday morning. The Tommies finished the weekend with a +30-run differential behind extraordinary individual contributions up and down the lineup.

Freshman, Mya Tautges helped herself with an RBI single to score Avery Wukawitz in the top of the first. The Aggies tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Tautges worked out of a bases loaded jam.

The Tommies broke out in a big way in the second with a seven-run frame. Avery Wukawitz smashed a three-run home run to right center field to score Zoe Trotter and Miley Wichman and then Cassidy Carby belted a two-run homer to right to bring Ella Cook home. Morgan Klein doubled in Abbi Stierlen and Kameron Monson singled home Klein.

St. Thomas' defense earned zeros in three consecutive innings while the offense scored four more in the third and two in the fifth.

Carby lasered her second home run of the morning to score Laken Lienhard and Ella Cook after Lienhard brought Wukawitz around to start off the four run third. Laken then earned another RBI in the fourth on a double that brought Trotter home. Wukawitz scored her fourth run of the day on a wild pitch.

Brier Blietz brought home Izzy Vick from third after Vick led off the fifth with a triple. It was Blietz's first career hit.

Tautges ran into some two out trouble and was relieved by Ella Cook in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded after she gave up one run. Cook shut the door with a strike out. The freshman went 4.2 innings in her first collegiate win with two runs (one earned) on six hits, two walks, and six strike outs. Ella Cook lowered her early season ERA to 1.51 with her 1/3 inning of work.

The Tommies tallied 18 hits and walked twice. Avery Wukawitz hit safely in all four of her at-bats and scored each time. Ella Cook earned three hits, Cassidy Carby, Morgan Klein, and Kameron Monson each tallied two-hit games.
