The Tommies kicked off the Mardi Gras Mambo with a 5-0 loss and 4-0 win
YOUNGSVILLE, La. – Abbi Stierlen and Ella Cook led the Tommies to a 4-0 win over Nicholls (3-2) after a weekend-opening 5-0 loss to Sam Houston (5-2) on Friday evening at the Mardi Gras Mambo. Cook worked her fourth career complete game shutout with just three hits and three walks allowed along with four strikeouts.
Game One
Sam Houston capitalized on a first inning error with a two-run home run and unfortunately that was all the offense the Bearkats needed. They added on for one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.
The Tommies combined for six hits. Morgan Klein's fifth inning lead-off double was the only one that went for extra bases. Klein joined Avery Wukawitz as the two Tommies with two hits in the ballgame.
Ava Kleinfeldt went five innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Mya Tautges worked a flawless frame in the bottom of the sixth inning to keep it a five-run deficit.
Game Two
Ella Cook got the start in game two and put together a vintage performance in her fourth career complete game shutout. The fifth-year Tommie lowered her early-season ERA to 0.86 and batting average against to .135.
The Tommies needed Cook to hold a Nicholls team that was fresh off a run-rule win over Eastern Illinois scoreless through four innings before the offense got on the board.
Abbi Stierlen tallied her second hit of the game to lead off the fifth inning with a single. Miley Wichman pinch ran for Stierlen and advanced to second on a successful sac bunt by Morgan Klein. Freshman, Brier Blietz, blitzed a ball into left center field to score Wichman on a double. She later scored on a passed ball to double the Tommies' lead.
Ella Cook led off the sixth with a single and Gracie Konkol came into pinch run. Konkol nabbed the first stolen base of her career and then came around to score on Abbi Stierlen's third hit of the night, a booming blast down the left field line, her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
Cook worked around a two-out error and hit-by-pitch and with a flyout to left field caught by the birthday girl, Zoe Trotter.
Stierlen stole the show on offense with half of the Tommies' six hits, a single, double, and home run. Blietz's double was the only other extra base hit.
Up Next
The Tommies gear up for day two of the Mardi Gras Mambo tomorrow for games against two strong opponents in Louisiana Tech and Southeastern Louisiana at 3 and 5 pm.
