Men’s Soccer secures come-from-behind victory with three second half tallies
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Tommie Men's Soccer (5-2-3, 0-1-0) continued its unbeaten streak at home with a 3-1 come-from-behind win over the Virginia Military Institute Keydets (2-6-3) on Tuesday afternoon at South Field. Mathis Guffroy scored a pair of penalty kick tries to secure his third game-winning goal of the season, the most by a Tommie in DI program history.
The Toms' win was also a program-best fifth in 2025. They allowed just one shot on goal in a dominant performance.
Game Summary
First Half
-Much like Saturday's Omaha loss, the Tommies were called for a foul that would impact the game tremendously. This time it was Ronan Selbo just outside the box that set up a VMI goal in the 22nd minute on a free kick.
-The Tommie bench got a yellow card shortly after the score.
-St. Thomas outshot the Keydets 4-0 after the lone goal of the first half.
Second Half
-Favor flipped for the Tommies after a halftime adjustment tacked on additional pressure that VMI struggled to counter.
-The Keydet's Conner Reid was called for a yellow card in the box in the 52nd minute and coach Jon Lowery called in his best scorer, Mathis Guffroy, to finish the job. The Frenchman scored on a ball to the lower left corner to tie the game.
-After a VMI foul in the box in the 63rd minute, Guffroy got a second chance from the penalty spot. This time, the VMI goalkeeper made the initial save and Guffroy sent home the live ball rebound to put the Tommies ahead.
-Ronan Selbo added some insurance in the 84th minute with his second of the season.
Quoting Jon Lowery
"The quick turnaround from Omaha was a challenge for the guys and VMI came ready to play. I am proud of the way that we countered after conceding early. We reconfigured a few things at halftime and gave the guys a few new ideas and they saw success with those changes. That's called being a student athlete, overnight bus ride to get back early Sunday morning and now we've got guys heading off to evening class. I am proud of the focus and execution from this group."
Quick Hits
-Four Tommies, including Moritz Krenc, played all 90 minutes. Simon Klevberg, Ronan Selbo, and Gabriel Verona each played every second.
-The Toms outshot the Keydets 18-1 and 7-1 on goal.
-Mathis Guffroy's two goals came off the bench.
-Oliver Corris and Chance Therrien each recorded assists on the Selbo goal.
Tommie Tidbits
-The brace from Guffroy is the fourth of the season for the Tommies and eighth in program history.
-The Tommies have averaged 19.3 shots and 7.67 shots on goal over the last three games. Their opponents have averaged 4.3 and 2.3 respectively over that span.
