Four different Tommies landed on an all-conference team
ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Men's Soccer finished an eyelash away from their first Summit League tournament appearance after a program-best 7-5-5 season. The Tommies were one of three Summit League teams to finish unbeaten at home, and they ended with the first positive goal differential of the DI era.
The Purple had impact players up and down the lineup and all over the field, but four stood out among the rest and earned six different conference honors.
Mathis Guffroy earned a spot on the All-League Second-Team and the All-Newcomer team after a tremendously productive season. The Frenchman dealt with some injury halfway through the season, but got the year started with points in four of his first five games. Guffroy recorded a brace against VMI and led the Tommies with three game-winning goals against Chicago State, Utah Tech, and VMI.
Yanis Lakhlifi mirrored Guffroy on the field and off, also landing a spot on the All-League Second-Team and All-Newcomer team. Lakhlifi led the Tommies with six goals to tie the single season DI program record. Lakhlifi recorded a brace against Chicago State in August, and scored arguably the most important goal of the season, nine minutes into the Tommies 1-1 tie against Denver to conclude the regular season. He finished the season in the Summit League top 10 in goals scored.
Simon Klevberg played every minute of conference play for the Tommies and landed himself a spot on the All-League Second Team. Klevberg anchored the Tommie defense from within and even scored the game-deciding goal in the Toms' lone conference win of the season at home against Oral Roberts. He and the rest of the Tommies allowed 1.29 goals against for the season, a program record by 36%.
Klevberg's running mate in the defensive middle was Gabriel Verona. Verona earned a spot on the All-Newcomer Team after also playing every minute of conference play for the Purple. He led the Tommies with 1,502 minutes played, a program record.
