Softball sweeps doubleheader with North Dakota

4/18/2025 8:54:00 PM | Softball

The Tommies continue to roll with fourth consecutive conference series victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Softball (25-16 overall, 8-3 Summit League) continued its rewriting of the record books with a doubleheader sweep over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks (24-17, 7-7) on Friday evening at Albrecht Field. The Tommies did so without leaving much doubt in 6-2 and 8-3 victories.

Game One Recap
The Tommies scored in the first inning for the 18th time this season with three runs to kick off their first game in program history at Albrecht Field where the Fighting Hawks were undefeated (5-0) to start the new facilities' tenure. St. Thomas started the day 12-5 when scoring in the first inning and finished out game one 13-5.

Laken Lienhard got the day started with a double to deep center field followed by back-to-back walks drawn by Avery Wukawitz and Cassidy Carby. Kaitlyn Raymond scored Lienhard on a fielder's choice and then Kameron Monson singled home the remaining two runners on base to put the Toms up by three.

Ava Kleinfeldt gave up one run in both the bottom of the first and bottom of the second innings but nothing more. Her game-winning line read: 7IP, 5H, 2R, 1ER, 3BB, 2K for her third consecutive conference complete game victory.

Her offense gave her some more support with two runs in the top of the fifth and one in the seventh. Cassidy Carby reached and then advanced to second base with two outs on an error by the North Dakota third baseman. Ella Cook just missed a home run and settled for a run scoring double to bring around Miley Wichman. Anna Caruso replaced Cook on second and then scored on a Kaitlyn Raymond single that bounced off the second baseman's glove into shallow center field.

Cook came through again in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to lead off the frame, her fourth of the season and first since March 2.

Abbi Stierlen was the only other Tommie with two hits, a pair of singles. Laken Lienhard and Avery Wukawitz each reached three times. Lienhard with a double and two walks and Wukawitz with three walks. As a team, the Toms walked eight times, their fifth time with at least eight walks this season, they are 5-0 when doing so.

Game Two Recap
Make that 14-5 when scoring in the first inning this season. In almost eerie fashion, the Tommies scored three in the first frame of game two and then gave up one run in the bottom half of the first.

Kaitlyn Raymond singled home a pair of teammates on a ball hit to shallow right field. Anna Caruso hustled to score from second and drew a throw from the outfielder, the catcher than threw to second to nab Raymond advancing to second, which allowed Wukawitz to score on the throw from the catcher. Two runs manufactured by near perfect baserunning.

Abbi Stierlen finished off the three run first with a single to score Raymond from second. Christina Crawford went to work with the lead and allowed a lone run to cross in the first.

The senior pitcher tossed one of the best games of her career (for the second game in a row) with the complete game victory behind 12 strikeouts, the most since she struck out 19 against USF in 2022. Eight of the final 12 outs she recorded came via the punchout.

Ella Cook added another RBI to her day when she singled home Cassidy Carby on a single in the third. The Toms finished their scoring day with four runs in the fifth.

Carby smashed her team-leading seventh home run of the season to deep left field and then Kameron Monson nearly hit the ball back to St. Paul on a moonshot home run to score Raymond and Stierlen.

The Fighting Hawks mounted a mini rally with two more runs off Crawford in the bottom of the fifth. She then struck out the side in order in the sixth in response.

St. Thomas tallied 11 hits and did not commit an error. They moved up to 25 wins on the season and secured their fourth consecutive Summit League series victory, a program first.
