Wukawitz smashes clutch home run to sweep North Dakota

Ella Cook pitched a complete game to finish off the Fighting Hawks
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – St. Thomas Softball (26-16 overall, 9-3 Summit League) continued its cruise through Summit League play with a 4-2 win over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks (24-22, 7-8) to secure its first conference sweep of the season. Avery Wukawitz smacked her sixth home run of the season in to top of the seventh inning to deliver the final blow on Saturday at Albrecht Field.

The Tommies scored in the first inning for the third time this weekend with two runs off an Ella Cook single to right field. Laken Lienhard and Avery Wukawitz, who each walked, came across to score as the Toms' starting pitcher helped herself.
Cook struck out two in the first, stranded two runners on with a strikeout in the second, and struck out another and stranded one more in the third before giving up a run.
The Fighting Hawks tied the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff walk, double, and two-run single in succession. Cook induced three groundouts to end the inning and keep the score level.
Both sides worked 1-2-3 innings in the fifth before the Tommies left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning. Three Tommies got on via a walk, error, and intentional walk, but could not retake the lead.
Ella Cook struck out her sixth and seventh batters of the game in the bottom of the sixth to setup a tied seventh inning.
Laken Lienhard singled with one out to give Wukawitz a chance to come through. The Tommie center fielder took the eighth pitch of her at-bat 276 feet over the left field fence. She circled the bases while yelling to her bench and then hugged a pair of teammates at home plate.

The Toms drew eight walks for the second game in a row, Wukawitz and Carby each walked twice. They are 6-0 when walking at least eight times this season.
