Men’s Golf takes a share of fifth at Pay It Forward Collegiate

The Tommies and Pioneers came out on top of the other four Summit League squads

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – St. Thomas Men's Golf showcased some consistent play over the course of the two-day Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate at Wigwam Resort this past Monday and Tuesday and took a share of fifth place out of the 16-team field. The Tommies tied with Denver, both teams finished ahead of South Dakota, Omaha, South Dakota State, and North Dakota. 
 
Recap
The Tommies finished the tournament five strokes over par with a 293-283-293—869 (+5), five strokes behind Eastern Michigan in fourth place. The three leaders ran away with the competition with Nebraska (-15) taking third, Marquette (-25) placing second, and Iowa State (-27) riding a -20 third round to victory. 
 
St. Thomas tied with Denver for fifth. South Dakota took sixth (+6), Omaha placed 10th (+9), South Dakota State finished 14th (+33), and North Dakota finished one spot clear of last in 15th (+38). The Tommies co-hosted the event with the University of Minnesota who came in 13th place (+13). 
 
Day one resulted in a much stronger finish than start for the Tommies. They finished five strokes over par collectively during the first 18 but rallied for a -5 in the second round to wrap up the day at even par in sixth place. Freshman, Tyler McNeive earned the best round to start the day with a 71 (-1), Owen Rexing followed up in the second round with a team-low 67 (-5). 
 
The Toms held their own on day two with five strokes over par in the third round. Zach Rouleau led the way as the only Tommie golfer under par with a 71 (-1). 
 
Owen Rexing, again, displayed his tremendous ability to spearhead the Tommies' efforts with a 20th place finish. He tied with three other golfers at one stroke under par. He went 74-67-74 with that second round including an eagle and five birdies. 
 
Matt Armstrong, Tyler McNeive, and Zach Rouleau each tied for 29th place and went two strokes over par. Armstrong went 75-70-73, McNeive shot a 71-72-75, and Rouleau rose 12 spots on the final day with a 73-74-71. 
 
Gavin Newkirk was the final scoring golfer for the Purple and finished in a tie for 81st place with a 82-74-78—234 (+18). Will Schlitz competed as an independent and took 68th place with a 75-74-78—227 (+11).
 
Up Next 
The Tommies are right back at it next Monday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 1 for the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Washington. This will be their second time at the event, they took 7th out of 18 teams last season.
