UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – St. Thomas Men's Golf set a single-round team score program record during the third round of the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Course in route to its first team tournament title of the 2024-25 season. Matthew Armstrong led the way with a tournament title score eight strokes below par, two strokes clear of the field.
Recap
The Tommies played their best golf of the tournament, and in the program's DI history, when they shot nine strokes under par during round three. Overall, they shot 284-293-279—856 at even par in a tie with UC Riverside for the team title, their first since April 11th of 2023.
Matthew Armstrong was toward the top of the individual leaderboard all competition but left the field with no doubt after a third-round-tournament-best 66 (-6) with seven birdies. Overall, the senior shot 69-71-66—206 (-8) and led the field on Par 3s (-2) and Par 4s (-8). Armstrong tallied one eagle and tied for the tournament lead with 13 birdies.
The next Tommie golfer on the leaderboard was sophomore, Gavin Newkirk who played very well at Chambers Bay last season with a career-best sixth place finish. This season, Newkirk took a share of 14th place with a 68-74-74—216 (+2). His 68 in round one was the best for the Tommies during the opening 18. He earned five birdies during that round alone; he finished the tournament with nine.
Next came Owen Rexing who's 69 during the second round was the best for the Tommies to finish out day one. He tied for 31st place with a 79-69-72—220 (+6). Tremendously, Rexing eagled on consecutive holes near the end of his low round. He posted a pair of twos on back-to-back Par 4s. His two eagles were tied for the most of the tournament.
