Armstrong climbs on final day with strong third round

The Tommies took 10th place of 13 teams at the Robert Kepler Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – St. Thomas Men's Golf could not get a footing across three rounds at the Robert Kepler Invitational hosted by Ohio State University at the OSU Scarlet Golf Course and finished in a tie for 10th place of the 13 teams in the field. Matthew Armstrong recorded the best round of the tournament for the Tommies with a 69 (-2) on day two and climbed 24 places to finish tied for 12th place. 
 
Recap
St. Thomas shot a 303-305-306—914 (+62) on a pair of blustery days in central Ohio. The Toms finished 22 strokes out of the top five and in second place of the three Summit League teams competing. The hosting Buckeyes won the event at 24 strokes over par. Kansas City finished in fourth with a +38 and Omaha came in 12th at +72. The Toms finished seven strokes clear of Creighton who took 11th
 
Matthew Armstrong shaved six strokes off his previous best round at the Scarlet Course with a 69 (-2) to rocket his way up to 12th place on day two. Armstrong shot 75-77-69—221 (+8) and was four strokes behind the top five. Cal Poly's Baron Sxeto ran away with the individual title at five strokes under par, six ahead of second place.
 
The freshman, Tyler McNeive, recorded the best second round of the tournament for St. Thomas. He finished shooting a 76-75-77—228 (+15) and finished in a tie for 33rd place. 
 
Gavin Newkirk shot a 76-76-79—231 (+18) and finished tied for 47th. Will Schlitz went 76-77-81—234 (+21) for 53rd place and Zach Rouleau shot a 79-78-81—238 (+25) for 64th place. 
 
Up Next 
St. Thomas Men's Golf finishes its 2024-25 season with the Summit League Championship in Mesa, Arizona at Longbow Golf Course. The Tommies finished tied for fifth place of the nine Summit League teams last year. With the addition of Northern Colorado and Weber State, there will be 11 teams competing on April 27-29.
