Matt Armstrong leads Men’s Golf at Summit League Championship

The senior finished in the top 25 after a 70 (-1) on day three

MESA, Ariz. – Matthew Armstrong finished the tournament strong in the top 25 after going one stroke under on the final 18 holes at the Summit League Championship at Longbow Golf Course. The Tommies took 10thplace as a team after shooting 309-286-295—890 (+38) across three days of play.
 
Tyler McNeive shot a new career-low 69 (-2) on day two to lead the Purple. The round was the lowest of any Tommie during the tournament.  
 
Day One Recap
The Tommies booked a 10th place finish after 18 holes. As a team they shot 25 strokes over par, their highest round score of the tournament. Matthew Armstrong led the way with a 73 (+2) behind four birdies. 
 
Armstrong birdied four of the first 12 holes and finished two strokes under par at the turn. He struggled down the stretch with double bogeys on 13 and 14 but finished off the afternoon with pars on 15, 16, 17, and 18. 
 
Gavin Newkirk shot a 76 (+5) followed by Tyler McNeive 79 (+8), Will Schlitz 81 (+10), and Zach Rouleau 82 (+11).  
 
Day Two Recap
As a team, the Tommies played their best round of golf on Monday. They finished two strokes over par (286) and did not have a single round score over 74 (+3). Their highest score on Monday was lower than their lowest score on Sunday in a bounce back effort. They began the day shooting from the back nine. 
 
The freshman, Tyler McNeive, led the charge with the best round of his collegiate career and the best round of the tourney from a Tommie. He finished the second 18 with a 69 (-2) and birdied each of his final two holes. He made par or birdie on all but two holes. This was McNeive's career-best round by two strokes. 
 
Gavin Newkirk and Zach Rouleau each followed with rounds of 72 (+1). Newkirk got there with four birdies and Rouleau with three. The second round was the best of the competition from both sophomores. 
 
Will Schlitz also went lowest in the second round with a 73 (+2). He recovered after a shaky start with birdies on 13, 15, 1, and 4. Matthew Armstrong added his highest score of the tourney with a 74 (+3). He finished at even par at the turn but bogeyed three of his final nine. 
 
Day Three Recap
Armstrong rallied back with his best round of the competition on day three with a 70 (-1). He rocketed up the leaderboard to start his round, at one point going six strokes under par, but struggled to finish, going over par on each of his final four holes. He went -5 on the front with an eagle on 18 and +4 on the back. Overall, the senior finished in a tie for 22nd place with a 73-74-70—217 (+4). 
 
Gavin Newkirk went off the board next in a tie for 41st place. He finished the day five strokes over par to match his first-round effort. Overall, Newkirk went 76-72-76—224 (+11). One stroke behind him was Tyler McNeive who shot a 77 (+6) on the final day to finish in a tie for 42nd place. He shot a 79-69-77—225 (+12) during his first collegiate championship competition.
 
Will Schlitz went just one stroke higher than his second day round with the Tommies' second best showing of the final round. He went three strokes over par (74) to move into 47th place with an 81-73-74—228 (+15).
 
Zach Rouleau finished in 51st place with an 82-72-75—229 (+16).
