Northern Iowa deals Women’s Soccer a setback
9/6/2024 6:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Panthers of Northern Iowa downed the Tommies 3-2 in Cedar Falls.
CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – The Northern Iowa Panthers (4-1-1 overall) jumped out to a lead, five minutes into the non-conference match and never looked back. They ultimately defeated the St. Thomas Tommies (2-3-1 overall) 3-2 at UNI Soccer Field on Friday evening.
Tatum Trettel and Izzy McEwan each scored their first goals of the 2024 season and the first of their collegiate careers. Trettel's came in her 13th career game and McEwan's, in her sixth.
Recap
The Panther's scored the game's first goal at the 4:10 mark and then doubled their lead at 20:01. St. Thomas' lone first half answer came from distance at 26:29. Tatum Trettel, a redshirt sophomore from Shoreview, Minn. possessed the ball just outside the near-side corner of the penalty box and rifled a shot towards the goal. Her shot took a fortuitous bounce off a defender's cleat and steamed into the back of the net.
The Toms outshot the Panthers in the first half, but it was UNI that headed into the break with a one-goal lead. After a couple grade-a chances from the Tommies, the home side again scored to restore their two-goal lead in the 75th minute.
Reminiscent of St. Thomas' most recent win over Siena, the Tommies did not go down without a fight. Freshman Izzy McEwan was gifted a fantastic shot at the goal after a long ball from Ellie Tempero found a dashing Mariah Nguyen. The senior tapped the ball forward to a perfectly placed McEwan and the Minneapolis native did the rest with 2:31 remaining in the contest. Unfortunately, the Tommies would not have the same opportunity again.
Northern Iowa outshot St. Thomas 16-10 and 8-5 on goal. The Panthers also out chanced the Purple with five corner kicks to zero.
Olivia Rowe made five saves, all in the second half.
Up Next
The Tommies return home to the friendly confines of South Field for an official game against NAIA opponent Viterbo on Sunday at 1 p.m.
