Tommies win thriller in Loudonville
9/1/2024 3:10:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Women’s Soccer won a battle with Siena that included two penalty shots and a last-minute goal, 2-1.
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – St. Thomas Women's Soccer (2-2-1, 0-0-0 Summit) rallied in the final minute with a goal to break a 1-1 tie after allowing a penalty shot goal in the waning minutes to the Siena Saints (2-3-0, 0-0-0 MAAC) on Sunday afternoon at Hickey Field.
Lexi Huber was once again the hero with her third consecutive road-game goal and second consecutive game-winning goal, this time with 37 seconds remaining. Olivia Rowe made five saves in goal for the Tommies including a pivotal stop of a penalty shot in the 77th minute.
Recap
Women's Soccer has played three games on the road this season, Lexi Huber has scored a goal in all three. Sunday's was much more decisive than her goal against Northern Illinois in a 4-1 loss or even her game-winning goal in the third minute of a 1-0 win over Marist. This one came after 89 minutes and 23 seconds of hard-fought college soccer and truly was the decisive blow that put the Tommies on top, 2-1.
The opening 25 minutes in the first matchup in history between the Tommies and Siena Saints passed by with one shot from Sophia Barjesteh off the crossbar at 9' and a saved try from Sofia Caballero at 24'.
Before the Saints had even put a shot on net, Abby Brantner lined up from well outside the penalty box for a free kick. The senior booted the ball and freshman goaltender, Cate Burns, came out to play it. She punched the ball directly onto the foot of McKenna Lehman who one-touched it home for her first goal of the season at 28'.
At the end of the first half, the Tommies had controlled possession of the ball and outshot the Saints 3-1. Rowes only save of the half came in the final two minutes.
Coach McGill and the Purple played a very defensive style of soccer to begin the second half and for the most part stayed out of trouble until Lissa Mizutani committed a foul inside the 18-yard box in the 77th minute. Olivia Rowe came up with a clutch save on the penalty to keep the Tommies out in front.
Siena's relentless attack added three corner kicks in a two-minute span before Mariah Nguyen was called for a foul within the penalty box for a second penalty kick awarded to the Saints. This time Rowe guessed wrong as the Saints tied the game with under four minutes to play.
St. Thomas turned on the pressure and launched an attack in the final minute. Mariah Nguyen tracked down a skied ball and headed it perfectly to lead Lexi Huber toward the net. The senior chased after the ball and, with one touch, tapped it over the goalkeeper with 37 seconds to play.
