Pratt set women's 200m dash record, Duffing broke men's 60m hurdles record

MANKATO, Minn. -- Two program records were broken Saturday for St. Thomas men's and women's track & field as they completed a successful Ted Nelson Classic. The Tommie women won the team scoring while the men finished second of 10 teams.

Sophomore Alexis Pratt broke a 15-year-old record in the 200m dash by 0.01, previously set by Nikki Arola in 2009, with a first-place time of 25.02. Pratt was one of three event winners and 13 top-three finishers for the Tommies, who saw 18 personal records fall. St. Thomas finished first of nine teams with a score of 166.5, followed by Minnesota State with 150.5.

Junior Sam Duffing won the 60m hurdles with a program record time of 8.13, topping the previous mark of 8.17 set by Erik Anderson in 2022. Duffing improved on his prelim time by nearly 0.20 seconds as he was just one of six event winners for the men, which was part of nine top-three finishers. A group of 13 personal records were broken to help St. Thomas to a second-place finish as a team, scoring 124 points behind Minnesota State's 179.

Men
Joining Duffing as an event winner included junior Nate Carlin in the 60m dash with a time of 6.98, junior Calvin Bream in the 400m dash in 51.50, sophomore Thomas Dundon in the 600m dash with a time of 1:21.87, sophomore Cameron Heppner in the 1000m run with a time of 2:27.81, and junior Harris Anderson in the 5000m run in 15:48.59.

Junior Isaiah Hopf finished second in the triple jump with a personal record mark of 14.86m (48-feet-9-inches), which ranks third in program history. Heppner's time in the 1000m run ranks fifth in program history.

Women
Along with her record in the 200m dash, Pratt took second in the 60m dash with a time of 7.68 to match her personal best set twice prior, which ranks second for the program since at least 2011.

Junior Taynian Walgrave won the 60m hurdles in 8.69, 0.02 shy of her personal best, while junior Hannah Cornelius finished first in the 400m dash with a time of 1:00.05. Sophomore Ava Wilber took second in the long jump with a personal record mark of 5.54m (18-2.25) to rank third for the program since at least 2011. Freshman Lauren Rott finished fourth in the shot put with a personal record of 12.93m (42-5.25), which ranks third for St. Thomas since at least 2011.

QUOTABLES
Men's Head Coach Pete Wareham on Saturday's performances, including Duffing's 60m hurdles record:
"We had some outstanding performances today at Mankato as we continue to build for peaking at the conference meet. Sam Duffing set a school record in the 60 meter hurdles. It was fun to see Nate Carlin win the 60 meter dash with his 6.98. Shane Aberg is quietly moving up the conference list in the shot put. We had several other guys move into the all-time top 10 list in their events.

"I was also impressed with the performances of our first year athletes. Overall, a good day and more positive momentum for the team."

Women's Head Coach Ashley Lucas following the team's overall win behind season best performances:
"The challenge to the women this week was to focus more on embracing the process and competing versus being fixated on the outcome. If we do that, then the results will take care of themselves and I think we really saw that today, highlighted by Alexis Pratt breaking the 200 meter school record as well as a ton more PR'ing throughout the meet. Lauren Rott had a monster day in shot put, Emily Rather ran a 16-second personal record in the 3000 meter and Ava Wilber had three personal records on the day just to name a few.

"Confidence is growing and we look forward to SDSU next week which is always a high level of competition and great prep for the conference championship."

Up Next
St. Thomas returns to action next week Feb. 9-10 at the SDSU Challenge in Brookings, S.D. Competition begins Friday with a handful of distance events and pole vault before resuming with the final day Saturday.
