Krenc ties career-high nine saves against the Pioneers
DENVER, Colo. – The St. Thomas Men's Soccer team traveled to Colorado to compete against conference opponent and top-ranked Denver on Saturday afternoon. In the Summit League battle, Denver (7-0-4, 2-0-0 Summit) took the early lead, keeping control of the game and ultimately defeating the Tommies (3-5-2, 0-3-0 Summit) at DU Soccer Stadium.
RECAP
Denver opened scoring in the fifth meeting between the two squads, scoring in the 20th minute of play. On a scoring chance for the Tommies, Merrick Schaefer recorded a shot on goal for the Purple, but was unsuccessful putting it past the Pioneer's goalkeeper.
The home team added its second goal with five minutes to go in the frame, taking the two-goal lead into halftime.
Out of break, Denver added three goals in 10 minutes to begin the second half.
The Tommies kept the pressure, competing for their first goal of the match as John Bence hit the bar, just inches from tallying a goal for St. Thomas off a free kick opportunity.
Moritz Krenc and the Tommie defense held the Pioneers off the board the remainder of the match as Krenc tallied five saves in the second frame, totaling nine in today's game. The sophomore has recorded nine saves in one other match in his collegiate career (9/2/24 vs Milwaukee).
Simon Klevberg, Gunnar Busch, Sidney Kerr and John Bence played all 90 minutes in front of Krenc at DU Soccer Stadium.
QUOTABLE
"Playing at Denver against a top-ranked team, it was a demanding game to end our five-day road trip," Head Coach Jon Lowery said. "Despite the disappointing result, we showed character and resolve, and learned a lot about who we are as a team – a lot to take away from this match as we grow."
UP NEXT
The St. Thomas men's soccer team returns to South Field for a two-game homestand. The Tommies are set to host Green Bay on Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Oral Roberts on Saturday, Oct. 12.
