Giner scores in Tommies' 3-1 defeat
St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas Men's Soccer team welcomed Green Bay to South Field for the final non-conference match of the season. Falling two goals behind at the end of the first half, the Tommies (3-6-2, 0-3-0 Summit) were unable to comeback, ultimately dropping the Wednesday match against Green Bay (9-3-0, 3-1-0 Horizon) 3-1 at home.
RECAP
St. Thomas kicked off the non-conference match against the Green Bay Phoenix. St. Thomas recorded the first shot attempt, however, the Phoenix gained the early lead in St. Paul scoring the first goal of the match in the 18th minute of play. Late in the first half, Green Bay doubled its lead, taking the 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Once again, the Tommies started the half with offensive pressure as Faris Colic launched the ball towards the goal.
Gaining momentum for the Purple, Alejandro Giner posted his second goal of the season, cutting the Phoenix in half in the 60th minute of the match.
St. Thomas continued to compete, demonstrating the resiliency of the squad. Four Tommies tallied three shots apiece in the match, as St. Thomas totaled nine shots in the final 45 minutes, battling to find the equalizer.
However, with five minutes to play, Green Bay added its third and final goal of the game, defeating St. Thomas 3-1 on South Field.
