Offensive explosion delivers Softball a doubleheader split

4/15/2023 9:09:00 PM | Softball

Fargo, N.D. – The St. Thomas Softball team scored 27 runs in their Summit League doubleheader against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks, the most runs scored across two games in their short Division I history but could only muster a split on Saturday afternoon on the campus of North Dakota State.

The Tommies had scored more than ten runs just three times all last season, they were undefeated in those games against Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, and Green Bay. Before Wednesday of this week the Toms had not scored more than ten runs in any of their 38 games.

In games 39, 40, and 41 the offense scored 12 runs in a win against Wisconsin, 13 runs in a loss (18-13) and 13 runs in a win (13-7) against North Dakota. They are averaging 12.7 runs in those three games after averaging 3.34 runs in their first 38 contests to start this season.

The North Dakota Fighting Hawks had not scored 18 runs in a game since March 31st of 2019, it took them 13 innings to score those runs. Nearly all 18 were needed in game one against St. Thomas on Saturday.

The Tommies and Fighting Hawks combined for 51 runs, 59 hits, 19 doubles, and six home runs.

St. Thomas had seven different hitters with base hits in game one, five individuals with at least an RBI, and seven different players with a walk.  In game two they had nine hitters with at least one hit, eight with an RBI, and five with a walk.

Brooke Ellestad and Katie Goelz each homered in game one. Ellestad and Ella Cook both hit one over the wall in the second game.

Coryn Jacobson reached base safely seven times in the doubleheader. She walked twice, doubled four times, and brought home six RBI. Brooke Ellestad matched Jacobson by also reaching seven times. She walked twice, doubled three times, hit two home runs, and drove in six RBI.

Kameron Monson (2), Avery Wukawitz (1), and Maddie Grad (1) also doubled.

Isabelle True worked all seven innings and got the win in game two. The senior struck out a career-high seven.
