Offense stays hot, Softball drops series finale 9-8

Fargo, N.D. – Avery Wukawitz picked up where the Tommies' offense left off the previous day by leading off the rubber match against North Dakota with her third home run of the season, but the Fighting Hawks came out victorious in a back-and-forth battle on Sunday afternoon.
The offense added one run in two of the next three innings. Kaitlyn Raymond doubled Maddie Grad home in the second and Brooke Ellestad hit a single to left field to score Sydney Mickett in the fourth to give the Toms.a 3-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the pitching and defense could not hold down a North Dakota team that scored 25 runs in the first two games of the series. The Fighting Hawks scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth, five of which were unearned on behalf of two errors in the inning.
St. Thomas answered back for three more runs in the top of the fifth and took a one run lead in the top of the sixth on a Morgan Klein single up the middle.
North Dakota made issued the game's final blow in the bottom of the sixth, a three-run home run.
The Purple rallied in the top of the seventh inning to score one and bring the score to within one but could not bring the tying run home from second.
Morgan Klein led the way with her first three-hit game of her career. Kaitlyn Raymond tallied three RBI in the losing effort on two hits. Coryn Jacobson added two more doubles in the game bringing her series tally up to six two-baggers (two in each game).
Brooke Ellestad walked three times in the game. She is the first Tommie in the DI era to record three walks in a single game. She also reached base safely 11 times in the three-game series.
