Softball looks to continue hot stretch against North Dakota

Wisconsin Recap
Freshman Avery Wukawitz fueled a six-run comeback as she drove in five runs in a 4-for-5 batting performance as Tommie Softball held off Wisconsin, 12-10, for a split of Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader.

Senior and Wisconsin native Mackenzie Rudy added a career-best four RBI with a double and a game-tying base-clearing triple in the game-two victory. Sophomore and Wisconsin native Brooke Ellestad added a two-run double in the third inning.

The Badgers (22-11) won game one 10-0.

St. Thomas recorded its first softball win over a Power Five program in its brief D-I era as it overcame an 8-2 deficit. The Toms came into game two with an 0-10 record against Power Five programs. Wisconsin has a win over nationally-ranked Alabama.

Coach Jen Trotter's Tommies moved to 6-1 over their last seven games, they have outscored opponents 45-22 in that stretch. They also climbed to 14 season wins through 39 games, already matching the 2022 season victory total in a 14-36 finish. This was just their second road win in nine tries this season.

Wukawitz hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to put the Purple ahead to stay. She added a two-out RBI hit in the final at-bat to extend the Toms' lead to 12-9.

Over the latest seven games which have produced the six victories, Wukawitz is batting .519 (14-of-27) with nine RBI and eight runs scored. She has raised her team-best average to .368 and extended her hitting streak to seven games. Wukawitz's five RBI are the most by a Tommie since Cassidy Carby's six RBI performance against Canisius in 2022. Her seven total bases are the most by a Tommie since she did it in a win over San Diego just over two weeks ago.

Freshman and Wisconsin native Morgan Klein took her first collegiate pitching win as she allowed three earned runs in 3.1 innings. Ella Cook came on to record the last five outs out of the bullpen and bring her program-leading save total up to three.

Game One Recap
The Tommies were riding a program-best five-game win streak heading into game one with a Badgers team that had won its previous five games. Wisconsin got on top early and never looked back taking down the Purple 10-0 in five innings.

The Big Ten squad scored nine of their 10 runs in the second inning and used that early rally to propel them to victory.

Avery Wukawitz and Brooke Ellestad were the only two to reach base via a base hit. Coryn Jacobson and Sydney Mickett each walked in the contest.

Grace Bennett slowed down the electric Badger offensive unit in relief. She allowed just one run to cross on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings of work.

Of starter Keira Murphy's nine runs given up in the second inning only two were earned.

700 for Bagley-Trotter
In what has been an impressive stretch for St. Thomas (six wins in seven games) began with a doubleheader Summit League sweep of Western Illinois. The Tommies came out on top in game one, 8-0 in six innings and defeated the Leathernecks 4-0 in the ladder match.

That second victory was coach Jennifer Bagley-Trotter's 700th career collegiate head coaching win.

Trotter amassed 676 career wins at Division II Missouri Western State University, the most in the Mid-America Athletics Association's history.

It took 24 University of St. Thomas victories to reach the milestone (14 last season and 10 this season).

Series History with North Dakota
The Tommies and Fighting Hawks met for three games last season in St. Paul at South Field. The Tommies took the day-one doubleheader 6-2 and 7-0 and dropped the final game of the series 5-3.

Isabelle True pitched a 2-run complete game in game one. She allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out four enroute to her second victory of the season.

Coryn Jacobson got on base 11 times over the three games. Jacobson went 7-8 with a home run, four RBI, two walks, and two HBP.
