King’s 30 saves were not enough as the Tommies fall to the Gophers, 4-0

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The St. Thomas women's hockey team returned home to St. Thomas Ice Arena after a night at the Xcel Enery Center, looking to bounce back on Saturday evening. However, the Gophers found four third period goals to top the Tommies.

Offensively, the Tommies put together 16 shots, three of which came on the powerplay, but were unable to put one away against Minnesota goaltender, Lucy Morgan.

Olivia King faced 34 shots on net this evening, totaling 30 saves for the Purple against her former team. Defensively, the Tommies blocked 17 shots. Ella Hause led the Tommies, tallying four blocked shots.

RECAP
It was a quiet start to the game, as the first period finished scoreless for both teams. The Tommies had five shots to the Gophers seven during the first 20 minutes of play.

Second period action started, and both goaltenders continued to shut down opponent opportunities. Beginning early in the second frame, five penalties between both teams created more action on both ends. The Tommies put six shots on goal, including three on the power play. Graduate student and former Gopher, Olivia King shut down two Gopher power plays and stopped 12 shots on goal for Minnesota. King totaled 19 saves through two periods, keeping the game scoreless.

The Tommies were assessed a penalty at the end of the second period, putting them a player down to begin the final period. Minnesota opened scoring early in third period on this powerplay opportunity.

One of the best offensive chances for the Tommies happened early in the third, as Rylee Bartz had a breakaway opportunity and was denied by the glove of the Minnesota goaltender.

After Bartz's opportunity, the Gophers capitalized again, making the score 2-0. Minnesota scored both of their final two goals in the final three minutes of play. The Tommies ultimately fell in game two of the series by a score of 4-0.

QUOTEABLES
Coach Johnson on Saturday's conference game:

"That was our challenge to the group. Let's stay in the moment, no matter what happens. Let's remind ourselves of the simplicity that it takes just to go out shift after shift and get our job done, and I thought we really executed well."

UP NEXT
