Tommies continue homestand with a weekend series against the Buckeyes

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Women's hockey hosts conference opponent, Ohio State, in a weekend series. The Tommies face-off against Ohio State at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20th and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21st at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
 
Ohio States holds an 8-0 record against St. Thomas. The Tommies played their first DI and WCHA contest against the buckeyes on September 24, 2021 in Columbus, Ohio.

Undefeated in non-conference play
The Tommies are 4-0 in non-conference play to start the 2023-24 season. The Purple have faced non-conference opponents Franklin Pierce and Lindenwood. In four games played, the Tommies have outshot nonconference opponents 171-54 and outscored opponents 23-9.
 
The Tommies' have set a D-I era scoring record, totaling seven goals in a single game twice this season. 11 skaters have scored goals for the Tommies, led by freshman Ella Boerger who has found the back of the net five times.
 
Last Weekend Recap
The Gophers were off to a fast start in game one of the weekend series. Minnesota opened scoring halfway through the first period after having control in the offensive zone. Abbey Murphy scored the first three goals of the game for the Gophers, two being in the first period.
 
Second period action began with an early goal by Murphy, netting her third of the game. Murphy's hattrick was followed soon after by a powerplay goal for the Gophers. The Gophers capitalized on their fifth goal of the game midway through the second period of play.
Minnesota began the third period with a goal less than a minute after the puck dropped. The Gophers scored their eighth and final goal in the last minute of the final frame.
 
It was a quiet start to the game two against the Gophers, as the first two periods finished scoreless for both teams.
 
Beginning early in the second frame, five penalties between both teams created more action on both ends. Graduate student and former Gopher, Olivia King shut down two Gopher power plays and stopped 12 shots on goal for Minnesota. King totaled 19 saves through two periods, keeping the game scoreless.
 
The Tommies were assessed a penalty at the end of the second period, putting them a player down to begin the final period. Minnesota opened scoring early in third period on this powerplay opportunity.
 
Later in the period, the Gophers capitalized again, making the score 2-0. Minnesota scored both of their final two goals in the final three minutes of play. The Tommies ultimately fell in game two of the series by a score of 4-0.
 
Scouting the Buckeyes
Ohio State (3-1-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) is led by eight year Head Coach Nadine Muzerall. Coach Muzerall led the Ohio State program to its very first national championship in 2021-22 season. Last season, defender Sophie Jacques of Ohio State was named the 2023 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner. Jaques was the first Ohio State player to earn the award and the second defenseman to win the award.

The Buckeyes are coming off a weekend sweep against No. 6/7 Duluth. Ohio State defeated the Bulldogs by scores of 5-2 and 2-0.
 
Ohio State's Hadley Hartmetz and Raygan Kirk earned WCHA weekly awards as announced on Monday. Hartmetz was named the league's Defender of the Week after three goals in game one against UMD. Kirk was named Goaltender of the Week after posting a shutout against the Bulldogs on Saturday.

Schedule Talk
The Tommies schedule is jammed pack with tough competition, both in nonconference and Western College Hockey Association (WCHA) play. In total, St. Thomas will play 35 games throughout the year, including 10 home games in the first five weekends of the season.
 
The Tommies opened the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) schedule with a home series against perennial power Minnesota October 13-14. The Friday night game of that series was played at Xcel Energy Center at 4:00 p.m. in a double header with the men's team playing after at 7:30 p.m.
 
The Tommies will be road warriors during the back half of the season, playing 10 of their final 14 games away from the comforts of Mendota Heights, Minnesota. St. Thomas will open 2024 with three consecutive road games against the Badgers and Huskies before returning home to host St. Cloud State on January 20. The Tommies will also host Minnesota-Duluth (February 9-10) and the Mavericks (February 24) in the final month of the regular season.
