Solheim's late goal and Maurer's 46 saves not enough, Tommies fall to No. 6 Duluth

Mendota Heights, Minn. – The Tommies' late surge was not enough against the No. 6 ranked Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth after giving up three goals in the opening period, ultimately falling 5-1 on home ice at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena in a Sunday matinee.

St. Thomas' Anna Solheim scored a goal late in the third period to give her a share of the team lead in points (10). Abby Promersberger set up the play to the fifth-year senior by shuffling a pass across the ice on a two-skater break tape-to-tape, Solheim did the rest. "Honestly I do not remember much before the goal, but I know I was on a two-on-one with Abby, and she gave me a beautiful little saucer pass and I put the puck in the net," Solheim said when asked about the goal post game.

Saskia Maurer gave up five goals in her 60 minutes in net while saving 46 shots on the day. Outside of a six-minute span in which the Tommies' defense allowed three goals, the Toms limited a high-flying Bulldog offense to just two goals in the final 49 minutes.

This was Maurer's third time between the pipes against the Duluth Bulldogs this season. Saskia made 121 saves between the three starts while allowing nine goals for a .931 save percentage.

The Tommies improved on their shot total from game one to game two against the Bulldogs (19 up from 12). Their 19-shot performance on Sunday was their most as a team in the four-game season series against Duluth.

Gabby Billing had a fantastic showing in the face-off circle winning 16 of her 24 draws, several of which came against Gabbie Hughes whose 57.9 face-off winning percentage ranks sixth in the Western Collegiate Hockey Conference. Brieja Parent also had a positive record in the face-off dot (7 of 10).

St. Thomas could not capitalize on any of its five-power play chances but did kill three of four penalties. Special teams were on display aplenty at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena as the Tommies were whistled for five offenses, and the Bulldogs sent to the penalty box seven times.

Quoting Coach Johnson
"I love how our team played. I love coaching our group…I really like the way we are playing in and through some tough games, tough moments, and tough situations that we have faced. We are still building credibility in our league and in our program, but I love where we are at, and I am excited for our future."
