Last Weekend Recap
Last weekend, St. Thomas faced No. 6 Minnesota Duluth. The Tommies fell in both contests by scores of 3-0 and 5-1.
On Saturday night, the Tommies kept No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth within one goal for the opening 40 minutes but could not contain the Bulldogs in the final period, falling 3-0.
The last time St. Thomas met with Minnesota Duluth before Saturday's game was at Amsoil Arena on December 10th. The Tommies battled the Bulldogs to a 1-1 tie and took the extra WCHA point in the shootout, upsetting the then No. 7/8 ranked Duluth team. Saskia Maurer was the brightest star in that performance making 48 saves in 65 minutes.
She picked up right where she left off holding the Bulldogs, who had scored 13 goals in their two prior games, to just three goals in 60 minutes. The Switzerland native made 27 saves for a .900 save percentage to keep her team within striking distance the entire way.
The Tommies' late surge in Sunday night's contest was not enough against the Bulldogs, after giving up three goals in the opening period, ultimately falling 5-1 on home ice.
St. Thomas' Anna Solheim scored a goal late in the third period to give her 10 points on the season, only one shy of Maddy Clough (11) for the team lead. Clough was credited with the secondary assist on Solheim's goal. Abby Promersberger set up the play to the fifth-year senior by shuffling a pass across the ice on a two-skater break tape-to-tape, Solheim did the rest.
Saskia Maurer gave up five goals in her 60 minutes in net while saving 46 shots on the day. Outside of a six-minute span in which the Tommies' defense allowed three goals, the Toms limited a high-flying Bulldog offense to just two goals in the final 49 minutes.
This was Maurer's third time between the pipes against the Duluth Bulldogs this season. Saskia made 121 saves between the three starts while allowing nine goals for a .931 save percentage.
The Tommies improved on their shot total from game one to game two against the Bulldogs (19 up from 12). Their 19-shot performance on Sunday was their most as a team in the four-game season series against Duluth.
Gabby Billing had a fantastic showing in the face-off circle winning 16 of her 24 draws, several of which came against Gabbie Hughes whose 57.9 face-off winning percentage ranks sixth in the Western Collegiate Athletic Conference. Brieja Parent also had a positive record in the face-off dot (7 of 10).
