Dobchuk's 50 save performance could not stave off red-hot Badgers
1/27/2023 10:19:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Mendota Heights, Minn. – St. Thomas' senior goaltender, Alexa Dobchuk, made 50 saves, but the Tommies could not slow down the high-scoring offense of the No. 8 ranked Wisconsin Badgers who handed the Toms a 6-1 setback on home ice at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena on Friday night.
Dobchuk's 50 saves are the most she has made in one game since stopping 52 Ohio State shots on November 6th earlier this season in front of the home crowd in Mendota Heights. This performance against the Badgers did not crack the program's top five. Dobchuk holds three of the top five highest save totals with 59, 58, and 52 save outings.
Wisconsin had a milestone-filled night against the Tommies with three players writing lines into the Badger's history books. Jesse Compher's second period power play goal was her 150th point of her career, Casey O'brien had four points on the night, the last of which was good for her 100th, and Nicole LaMantia became just the third Badger defenseman to surpass the 100-point mark. The Badgers sported four players who were part of their 2018-19 NCAA Championship campaign.
St. Thomas' lone goal in the game belonged to the quick-skating sophomore defenseman, Maddy Clough. She unleashed a beautiful wrist-shot that got just passed the shoulder of the reigning WCHA Goaltender of the Week, Cami Kronish. The goal was Maddy's sixth of the season and team-leading 12th point. Assisting on the play were Brieja Parent and Clough's defensive line mate Haley Maxwell.
The Tommies' power play was 0-3, but not without controversy. On their final chance, Nicole Vallario redirected an Abby Promersberger redirect of an Allie Monrean shot from deep, into the back of the net. Initially the referee signaled toward the net dictating a made goal. After much contest from Wisconsin's goaltender Cami Kronish, the officials came together and ruled Vallario played the puck with a high stick, no goal. St. Thomas head coach, Joel Johnson asked for a review and after the referees did not overturn the call on the ice the Tommies had to serve a delay of game penalty late in the third period.
The Badgers outshot the Tommies in every period and ended the game with a 56 to 15 shots on goal advantage. St. Thomas held their own in the faceoff circle against the best drawing team in the WCHA going 29-31 on the dot.
