Malecha with 36 saves as Tommies drop game two against No. 8 Wisconsin
1/28/2023 10:18:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Mendota Heights, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team fell behind the No. 8 ranked Wisconsin Badgers early and could not recover, falling 3-0 at home on Saturday night.
The Badgers turned their first shot of the contest into their first goal of the night just 28 seconds into play.
Freshman goaltender, Maggie Malecha, kept her wits together after giving up the early tally, stopping all 11 other shots that came in the period.
Malecha gave up two more goals in the second but stopped the Badgers completely in the final frame.
The freshman ultimately finished with a career-high 36 saves for a .923 save percentage.
St. Thomas' penalty kill was a perfect two for two on the night allowing just four shots on goal during the four shorthanded minutes.
Offensively, the Tommies struggled to get much going outside of the faceoff dot. The Toms were 0-5 on power play opportunities but finished strong with four quality chances in just over one minute to concluded regulation. Overall, they mustered just 16 shots on net.
They thrived in the faceoff circle outdrawing the Badgers 36-19. Gabby Billing (13-5), Brieja Parent (10-3), Anna Promersberger (6-2), and Abby Promersberer (1-0) all finished with positive faceoff records.
