St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas softball (12-28, 7-7 Summit League) swept North Dakota (12-34, 2-12 Summit League) with a pair of well-balanced performances on Saturday.
Kaitlyn Raymond and Brooke Ellestad led off the bottom of the first in game one with back-to-back singles, followed by a Sarah Hudson walk, to load the bags with no outs. Katie Goelz tallied an RBI on a groundout followed by a Cassidy Carby sacrifice fly to put the Tommies up 2-0.
Goelz would add another RBI in the bottom of the second after reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring Maddie Grad. The team scored a run in each of the first four innings, helped by a third inning Raymond RBI-single, and a Coryn Jacobson run-scoring base hit in the bottom of the fourth. Nicole Pieper also tallied an RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth frame.
Isabelle True continued her recent streak of dominance with a seven-inning start, allowing just one earned run, and striking out four. The win was the second of the season for the junior pitcher.
Three different Tommies finished with multiple hits in game one, including Raymond and Jacobson, who each tallied three hits.
Game two saw a well-rounded plan of attack by the Tommies lead to a 7-0 shutout victory over the Fighting Hawks. Freshman Christina Crawford picked up her sixth victory with a seven-inning shutout performance, striking out five, and allowing just four base hits.
Jacobson opened the scoring in game two with a home run to right field. The home run was the first of Jacobson's Division I career, as the junior outfielder could not be stopped at the plate on the day. In the bottom of the fourth, Jacobson added another RBI on a single to left field, driving in Goelz.
The Toms opened up the floodgates offensively in the bottom of the fifth as three runners crossed the plate. Carby, Jacobson, and Pieper all finished with run-scoring base hits in the inning, helping the team to a 5-0 lead. Goelz notched an RBI-base hit of her own in the bottom of the sixth.
The two wins over the Fighting Hawks were the first same-day pair of wins since the team's season-opening sweep on Feb. 11 against Ball State and Eastern Illinois. It was the first same-day sweep for the Tommies against a Summit League opponent.
