Softball's late rally falls short against North Dakota
4/24/2022 2:33:00 PM | Softball
St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas softball (12-29, 7-8 Summit League) lost to North Dakota (13-34, 3-12 Summit League), 5-3, on Sunday.
A windy day featured a late rally attempt from the Tommies fall short against the Fighting Hawks. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Cassidy Carby led off with a single to right field and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. After an attempted steal from Coryn Jacobson, Carby scored on a throwing error by the North Dakota catcher, tying the contest at 1-1.
Following four-straight runs from the Fighting Hawks, the Tommies found themselves down 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Kaitlyn Raymond and Brooke Ellestad opened the bottom of the frame with back-to-back singles. Katie Goelz lined a one-out single up the middle to drive both runners in and cut the deficit to two runs. With the bases loaded, a strikeout and flyout ended the comeback attempt and the game.
Megan Baniecke threw six innings and struck out one batter on Sunday. In relief, fellow senior pitcher Kendall Hopkins allowed two earned runs and struck out two Fighting Hawks.
Offensively, Ellestad picked up a three-hit game against North Dakota with one run scored. Jacobson was 1-2 at the plate but also reached base twice on hit by pitches. Goelz had the lone RBIs for the team on the day.
