Men's Hockey drops opener at Alaska-Fairbanks, 6-1

Fairbanks, Alaska -- Host Alaska-Fairbanks scored three goals in the opening 8:00 of the game and went on to record a 6-1 win over St. Thomas in Friday night's non-conference men's hockey action.
The Nanooks (10-16-1) ran their win streak to four games, capitalizing with three goals in each of the first two periods.
St. Thomas outshot Fairbanks, 29-27, but the home team killed off seven of eight Tommie power plays while converting 2-of-5 of its own.
Ethan Gauer recorded his first collegiate goal -- a power-play tally 6:52 into the third period, assisted by Cameron Recchi -- for the lone scoring for Tommies (2-26-1).
This is the first Alaska trip for St. Thomas hockey since January 1989.
The teams play again Saturday at 7:07 p.m. Alaska time to close out the weekend series.
