Tommies take down Alaska Anchorage 5-2 on Friday night
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Lucas Van Vliet led St. Thomas men's hockey (3-4-0, 1-1-0 NCHC) to its first Friday night win of the season with the first hat trick of his career in a 5-2 victory over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (1-8-0) at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena. It was the second consecutive Tommie game with a "hatty," following Nathan Pilling's three-goal performance last Saturday at Miami.
St. Thomas broke through on the power play after a JP Steele tripping penalty, with Van Vliet scoring on an assist from Chase Cheslock with 29 seconds left in the first period to give the Tommies a 1-0 lead.
St. Thomas created early pressure in the second period, including a power play after an Ethan Warrener tripping penalty, but Alaska Anchorage tied the game 1-1 when Oren Shtrom scored nearly eight minutes in. Van Vliet put the Tommies back in front shortly after, with an assist from Nick Williams, and Bauer Berry added his first goal of the season on assists from Van Vliet and Pilling to make it 3-1. Ingemann turned away a late push from the Seawolves, making saves with 1:26, 1:00 and :50 remaining, before Pilling scored on an assist from Winter Wallace with 30 seconds left to send St. Thomas into the third period ahead 4-1.
Van Vliet created early chances in the third period, putting one shot on goal and hitting the pipe in the opening minute. Alaska Anchorage cut the lead to 4-2 when Luke Helgeson scored at even strength on assists from Shtrom and Bianchet. St. Thomas answered on a power play after a Samuel Boisvert hooking penalty, with Van Vliet completing the hat trick on assists from David Rozsival and Cheslock to make it 5-2.
Will Ingemann won his second straight start, making 23 saves on 25 shots for a .920 save percentage. Van Vliet, Cheslock and Pilling each recorded multi-point games, while Berry and Wallace both picked up their first points of the season.
The Tommies outshot their opposition 38 to 25 and won 36 of 51 face-offs. They did not take a penalty that resulted in a power play and converted on two of their four power play opportunities.
