Game Notes -- Women's Hockey looks to get back on track against non-conference foe Lindenwood

11/9/2022 12:13:00 PM | Women's Hockey

St. Paul – Women's hockey heads to Maryland Heights, Mo. for a non-conference series with the winless Lindenwood Lions (0-8-0).

St. Thomas will play its first two-game daytime series this Thursday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 1:10 p.m. respectively. Both games will be taking place at the Centene Community Ice Center marking the second consecutive season the two teams will play in Missouri.

The Tommies are coming off a hard-fought weekend against the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes (10-1-1) falling by scores of 4-0 and 6-0 at the Saint Thomas Ice Arena and bringing their overall record to 1-9-0.

The Lions come into play without a win early in this 22-23 season. Lindenwood has played four series, two against the WCHA's Bemidji State and No. 5 Wisconsin, and two against CHA conference opponents No. 12 Penn State and Syracuse. They have been outscored 44-9 but have three losses by just one goal, Bemidji State 3-2 OT, Penn State 4-3, and Syracuse 4-3.

Caution, Goaltenders at Work
Although neither goalie notched a win onto their record, both Saskia Maurer and Alexa Dobchuk performed mightily against the first place Buckeyes.

On Saturday, Maurer stopped 47 of 51 shots faced (.922 SV%). She tallied at least 15 saves in each of the three periods and did not allow a power play goal on three attempts (9 shots).

Dobchuk followed suit on Sunday stopping 52-58 (.897 SV%) Buckeye shots. Dobchuk's period high, 19 saves, came in the opening frame and she did not have fewer than 16 in either of the following periods. The netminder did not allow a power play goal on two attempts (8 shots).

Stay Disciplined
The Tommies are now the second least penalized team in the country behind on Brown of the ECAC.
St. Thomas lost hold of the number one spot after being sent to the penalty box six times against Ohio State.

The Purple's discipline is by far the best in the WCHA, a full one minute fewer than the next closest conference foe, Minnesota Duluth.

Special Teams
Both St. Thomas and Lindenwood have struggled on the power play this season. St. Thomas' 7.4 PP% mark ranks them 39th out of 42 teams in the country and Lindenwood's 10 PP% has them coming in at 35th in the country.

Things are much more lopsided on the penalty kill side. After St. Thomas killed all six power plays against a top-two special teams scoring team in Ohio State, their 88.9 PK% sits them ninth in the country. Lindenwood special teams' struggles have carried over to the penalty kill, 73.3% puts them 37th in the NCAA.

The last time St. Thomas got through a weekend series without allowing a power play goal was earlier this season against Franklin Pierce.

Scouting the Lions
Lindenwood (0-8-0 overall, 0-4-0 CHA) is coming off a competitive weekend with the Orange of Syracuse. Syracuse took both games by scored of 4-1 and 4-3.

The Lions are lead on the ice by sophomore forward Morgan Neitzke with six goals and eight points. Neitzke has scored two goals on two occasions this season against Bemidji State and Penn State. The Michigan native tallied her sixth goal of the season last time out against Syracuse.

Sarah Davies and Quinn McLaren are tied for the team lead with three assists in the early going.

In goal, the Lions have called upon senior Natalie Ferenc for all but two games this season. In her six games Ferenc has amassed a 4.24 GAA and .902 SV%.

Series History
Lindenwood has won both meetings between these two programs by scores of 4-3 OT and 4-1.

Allie Monrean and Nicole Vallario each scored in the game one overtime loss and Saskia Maurer allowed four goals against while saving 43 Lindenwood shots.

Nicole Vallario had herself a nice weekend as she was the only Tommie to score two goals, one in each game. Maurer allowed three goals and tallied 27 saves.

Natalie Ferenc was in goal for game one and allowed three goals against and stopped 29 Tommie shots.
