Women's Hockey stands tall in 4-0 loss to elite Buckeyes

Mendota Heights, Minn. -- No. 2-ranked Ohio State had a fast start en route to a 4-0 road victory over Tommie Women's Hockey in WCHA play Saturday night at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

The defending national champion Buckeyes (9-1-1 overall, 9-1-1 WCHA) scored three goals in the game's first 21 minutes.

Sophomore goalie Saskia Maurer came up huge in goal to keep the Tommies (1-8-0, 0-7-0) within range. Maurer made 47 saves on a night when Ohio State outshot the Tommies 51-16.

Maurer's 47 saves tie for 10th most for a Tommie goalie in the Division I era.

Four different players had the Buckeyes' four goals, and eight different players scored the nine points.

The teams play again here Sunday (2 p.m.) to wrap the weekend series.


Did You Know?

St. Thomas gave up 14 goals in an early two-game series vs. Wisconsin to start WCHA play. Since then, the Purple have allowed 19 goals over their last seven games.

Last season Ohio State outscored the Tommies 24-4 in four meetings.

The Buckeyes won their last 10 games last season and improved to 19-1-1 in their last 21 contests.
